Write the laws based on the citizenship of the parent(s).

Born in the USA is a fluke method and it only encourages the gaming of the system by people that don’t belong here. And keep on with this madness and then let’s see how their descendants treat ours.

It is a smart move for 0 to push imigration reform to take the heat off Obamacare. Illegal immigration is the one issue that can rip the anti Obama coalition apart. In 2008 Every candidate but McCain adopted a no-tollerence policy on illegal immigration, conservatism was rejected by the GOP primary voters in favor of...a new Washington tone. Kinda like in 2000. Unfortunately that message couldn't beat Hopey-Changey with moderate voters. Hardcore anti-illegal immigration voters who wouldn't vote for McCain can look forward to the Obama Amnesty.

In June of 06, Speaker Hastert and Majority Leader Boehner announced they would not compromise with the Senate version of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 even though the bill had passed the Senate and House. In Nov they lost their leadership positions. Just prior to the 2006 elections the Congress passed, and Bush signed, a border fence and ID reform. In every Mexican border state the GOP lost at least one (anti-illegal) congressmen, and the rats lost none. The lesson of the 2006 immigration debate was trying to placate hardcore anti-illegal wing will cost you elections. It's a lesson we should have aleady learned after the CA GOP was reduced to a flacid joke in the wake of Prop 187. The loss of Latino votes who voted for Bush in 2004 was reflected in the defeat of Graf, Hayworth, Hostettler, DeLay, Pambo, Bonilla, Gilcrist, Harris, Santorum, and other conservative Republicans.

Obamnesty is coming soon unless Obama wants the issue in 2012. I have no preference about which leach steals my money, illegal or citizen. You are welcome to condemn only foreign thieves.

For the longest time, my father would hire illegals to help adminster our ranch. My mother died when I was a toddler and I was raised by a the wife of one of these. I was speaking Spanish before I spoke english. Their children were for all intents and puposes my brothers and sisters. Their children were all born here. All grew up to be true, blue patriotic Americans. One of the girls is a doctor. All the boys served stints in the Army, one even retired after 20+ years of service. They have not one drop of sentiment or loyalty to Mexico. Under what you propose, these people would never have been allowed to live here and America would have been worse off for it.

My father was not the only one around here who did this. The ranchers would hire these people then sponsor them as residents. Many of them had children who were born on American soil when they were illegal. I knew their children. Went to school with them. Played football with them. Proud Americans, every single one of them.

The Anchor Baby arguement is really not that realistic. You would not stem the tide in the least as most of the illegals coming over are not families but single.

I had an ex-girlfriend who’s farmer father had a similar story. But let me ask you:

What’s the purpose of having immigration laws?

What was the purpose of “born in the USA” law?

Who should be in control of who comes here . .and who stays here? The USA or foreigners?

National Review covered this in 2 issues in the 1990’s. Then Lowry purged it.

The author is a legal illiterate.

“anchor babies” as understord by the popular culture were extinguished in 1996 with the immigration reform law.

I used to be the parents followed the citizens child. NOW THE LAW is different. The child citezen follows the parents who are being deported.

Birthright citizenship is legally different from anchor babies.

Also for those, like this clueless author, who don’t know the child citizen has to ACUTALLY LIVE IN THE USA FOR TEN YEARS UPON for THEIR offspring to automatically become US citizens.

this is all at the http://www.uscis.gov website (formerly INS)

What the author SHOULD be addressing is the effort to pass the DREAM act which will turn ALL students, regardless of legal status or citizenship, into anchor babies up to the age of 30. (!)

If you REALLY want a lesson. Greece had TWO illegal alien amnesty programs. Their ecconomy is in the toilet today. (and sombody keeps flushing)

so remember: Anchor Babies and Citizenship are DIFFERENT.

Like I keep saying, having a child born here should not effect an illegal’s status. Those people should be illegal until they make themselves legal. That should not keep their offspring being born here from having citizenship. There should be no condition or litmus test to being a citizen. No one should be judged “good enough” to be a citizen or not by anyone. You are born here, God decided it to be so, you are an American. I am not in favor of Amnesty. I am all for sniper towers, barbed wire and mine fields on the border. I am all for every single illegal being rounded up and shipped home. But it is my true and heartfelt belief that everyone born on American soil is an American.

Families certainly have been coming up in droves for the past several years. Entire extended families have moved here, many don’t bother to learn English and don’t show loyalty to this country in the way most that crossed years ago did. I remember the time when what you are saying was true- not anymore- at least on most of the border. Remember the huge protests a few years ago in favor of illegals getting amnesty? Few of those people showed any loyalty to the U.S. while carrying the Mexican flag. Many of the illegals now do not want to become part of the U.S. in any way- they want this part of the country to become part of Mexico.

Another issue not everyone is aware of is that many Mexican women, that have NEVER lived here and never intend to live here cross the border to have their babies so the baby will be citizens and qualify for any and all benefits in the U.S. including education. Many hospitals on the border have had to close because they were overwhelmed by all the Mexican citizens wanting to have their baby in the U.S. but no one was paying the medical bills.

All along the border students from Mexico cross to attend school in the U.S. and since the children are citizens- it is hard to legally keep them out of U.S. schools. It would make a huge difference if babies born here were NOT automatically citizens.

No one should be granted permenant status who is not going to assimilate into American way of life.

But it does affect their status. The incentive to cross the border to have a child should stop. What right do taxpayers have to control such expenditures after birth? Why shouldn’t a government have the sovereign right to control its borders?

What national security interests might be compromised? Think about it.

What effects on public safety and health? Look what’s happening along the border now. Keep looking the other way on immigration and it’s going to get ALOT worse.

And at the ballot box too. Not everyone can have the God given right to live here. Yes, we are lucky but just because of that doesn’t mean we open it up to everyone. It’s insanity otherwise and that’s what’s trending now. Project it out into the future. Pessimisitic? You bet.

I think the reason many don't know the children need to live here 10 years to be citizens is because it is not being enforced that way. Anyone that can show proof they were born here is treated as a citizen- if asked of course they claim they lived here. Many citizen children cross the border every day to go to school that have never lived in the U.S.- they are still being considered citizens by our authorities. Many immigration and citizenship laws are not being followed when it comes to people from Mexico especially. The issues would not be so far out of hand if our laws had been followed in the past and being followed now. Non enforcement of our immigration laws is the biggest problem.

Jack, we all have stories like that. Those are NOT the people we're talking about. This is a tsunami of millions coming over now, and they're much more socialistic than the folks (AMERICANS) you speak of. The new 'reconquista' believes this nation is his to claim. This is a new and VERY different culture in Mexico & the rest of the 3rd world.

"The Anchor Baby arguement is really not that realistic. You would not stem the tide in the least as most of the illegals coming over are not families but single."

Not so. Half of illegal aliens don't work. They work the system, and there are between 300000 & 450,000 anchor babies born each year, depending on the source you look at. Many countries including Turkey and Mexico have special tourism trips for birthing in the USA. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2470631/posts
