BUENOS AIRES, - Argentina marked the anniversary of the 1982 Falklands war with a parade, and the country's president says Britain should turn over the islands .
Argentina invaded the Falklands, claiming they were part of its sovereign territory, but a British counter-invasion defeated the Argentines, who lost 904 lives.
President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner delivered a national address on the anniversary Friday from Ushuaia, which was the hub of the Argentine military operations during the 1982 conflict, The Times of London reported. Under Argentine law it is the capital of the region that encompasses the islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas, which lie some 340 miles out to sea.
Kirchner said Britain's claim of "sovereignty from a distance of 14,000 kilometers (about 8,700 miles) is not sustainable, neither historically, nor legally, nor geographically -- but, above all, it is not sustainable logically," The Times reported.
She added: "It's not an exercise of sovereignty but rather colonialism and probably the last such one. The question of the Malvinas is a stain that should be rubbed out."
After she spoke, war veterans held a march in Buenos Aires shouting, "Give us back our islands!" and "Out with the pirates!".
Hundreds of veterans and militant political groups gathered in the Buenos Aires banging drums and carrying sticks, finally converging on the British Embassy. Riot police were deployed to control them, The Times said.
It’s all about oil.
People who live in the Untied States of Murrica!
Great Britain had a navy then with our logistical backing.
Things are slightly different now.
Heating up everywhere these days.
obama will side AGAISNT the UK!
“Shes ugly in my book. Us Argentinians have far better looking women.”
I’d rather hit Susana Gimenez. She’s might be more conservative, too;)
I agree. The Brits have had near 30 years to beef up and study defense of the islands. Their submarine force negates any impact of the Argentine navy.
Personnel fired anti aircraft rockets are 1-2 generations ahead of what was available 30 years ago.
The Argies could win but it would be at significant cost.
I was about to ask if you would...
Actually, I’m afraid that a few of them (Marines) were also caught up in the moment ~ smiling and waving along with the naval personnel ~ but, yeah, the 3 guys on the right look the way one would hope a Marine would look after such an ordeal.
In several local papers, the 3 on the right had actually been cropped out of the image.
Argentina is going to make a move, eventually, because they know that as long as Obama is in power, Britain is not going to get as much a a lifted finger from us on their behalf.
The Israelis just tell us to pound sand, and I don’t blame them a bit. Two of our closest allies think we are crap now. And rightfully so.
...or un-thought...
The Argentinans well could have won the 1982 war. Some extremely bad upper level leadership.
There were a lot of minor things that had huge impacts - the day the Argentianian carrier was attempting a strike on the British task force, there wasn’t enough wind for their Skyhawks to take off (incredibly rare in the South Atlantic for this to happen.)
An Argentinian sub stalked the two British carriers, and had several good shots, while never being detected. However, a crewman had attempted to clean the contacts of two wires in their fire control system, and switched them when he replaced them; this caused all the torpedoes they fired to go out of control after being fired.
And perhaps most importantly the Argentinian bombs were being dropped at such low altitudes that they weren’t detonating; had all Argentinian bombs that hit ships detonated, the losses probably would have been severe enough to cripple the invasion force.
Would have helped if the Argentian Air Force had targeted the transports more instead of warships on their bomb runs.
However, since 1982, while the British military obviously has shrunk and suffered severe budget cuts, the Argentinian military and navy have weakened EVEN MORE.
Argentinians have no chance now.
The woman is a left wing lunatic with a friend in our White House....
It is the story of war, plain and simple.
The unexpected coupled with the simple mistake or misjudgment snowballs to alter the course of a battle.
Washington evacuating the Continental forces to Manhattan, saved from being annihilated by a thick fog bank that concealed them from both the British Army and the British fleet. A trick of the climate.
The US Marines landing on Tarawa, get stuck on the reef because of a freakish variation in the predicted tide patterns.
And so on.
Although that mistake on Tarawa did not alter the course of the battle, it DID cost many men their lives.

Argentinian President Cristina Kirchner... April 07, 2008... two-day visit to the French capital, to discuss Colombia's hostage crisis and to renegotiate Argentina's foreign debt. Thanks JoeProBono.
er...it DID alter the course, but not the outcome, which is what I meant!
...oops, wrong thread. :-)
...(brightening...)
...but not as "NOT GUILTY" as
Cheers!
