Feds: Homes With Chinese Drywall Must Be Gutted
Associated Press via ABC News ^ | April 2, 2010 | Associated Press

New federal guidelines say thousands of U.S. homes tainted by Chinese drywall won't be safe unless they are completely gutted.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission released the guidelines Friday. They say electrical wiring, outlets, circuit breakers, fire alarm systems, carbon monoxide alarms, fire sprinklers, gas pipes and drywall must be removed.

About 3,000 homeowners, mostly in Florida, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, have reported problems with the Chinese-made drywall.

A large quantity of the drywall was imported during the housing boom and after a string of Gulf Coast hurricanes. It has been linked to corrosion of wiring, air conditioning units, computers, doorknobs and jewelry, along with possible health problems.

My garage is unpainted dry-wall. I guess I can tell what type it is if I look at it (or I can look at teh backside of an unfished closet and see what it says). What should I look for “Made in China” or will it not be that obvious?

Anglophone Canadians are often mocked by Quebec Francophones — or, sometimes we get the “je ne parle pas anglais” treatment. OTOH, if let it be known that you're American; you'll find that nearly every urban dweller speaks English. They won't mock your attempts at French either.

That was exactly my wife’s and my experience when we were in Montreal for the F1 race a number of years ago.

Store clerks, waiters, taxi drivers, etc., would all start out speaking French to us, but as soon as they noticed our blank stares or heard us say “We’re from the U.S., sorry, but we don’t speak French”, they would switch to near-perfect English - and not one of them seemed to resent “having” to do it, either.

These folks don’t need to be told there is a problem. They know.

If your house doesn’t smell like rotten eggs, ie. sulphur, then you’re probably okay.

Being in the forensics business, I know a bit about this problem. Not all the houses that have this problem have Chinese drywall. This problem has been reported in houses with drywall made in the US and Canada, too.

I can identify it by the smell. It smells of rotten eggs. All you have to do is look at your wiring anywhere it is accessible. There will be corrosion all over it.

First...it’s Walmart, not wallmart. Secondly, Walmart sells the same Chinese produced products that every other retail outlet in America. Thirdly, Walmart doesn’t sell dry wall.

There is no “made in” mark on finished drywall, so you can’t tell the origin by looking at it. And most of the time the drywall installer orders from a supplier who delivers it to the jobsite, so the guy who hung the drywall probably wouldn’t know either. If your house was built between 2002 and 2007 and smells like rotten eggs, you might want to investigate further.

That and gypsum mined here can probably be differentiated from that mined in China.
