If your house was built before 1978, or have children, and you want to make repairs on an area greater than 6 square feet, have I got a surprise for you!

You can't just hire a contractor, no no, it must be an "EPA approved" contractor. But wait, it gets better. Since they don't have enough "accredited trainers" to train all these contractors, your project may just have to wait.

Lest you think this law is Obama's doing, GWB's EPA issued the ruling in 2008.

How big are the fines for not complying? 32K according to Stuart Varney.

Any other year I would have blown this off as an “April Fools” headline.

What if you choose to repair it yourself? No contractor. Just a trip to Home Depot or Lowe's for materials.

A New law that requires Contractors repairing or painting homes made before 1978 or facilities occupied by children comes into effect on April 22, 2010.

Huh?

Can you repair 6 square feet one day, another 6 the next, and so on? Each day is one repair?

I work with a guy who’s been in the newspaper industry for over 60 years. A large portion of that time has been spent working with the molten lead that was used for linotype newspaper production. They practically bathed in the stuff and were fine.

I heard that schools are exempt from this requirement, since they are government-run. If Obama has his way our kids will be living at the schools 24-7 but the government doesn’t have to keep them as safe as we do.

It’s just all so stupid.

Yes... We’re a small contractor in MA, and both my brother and father are in “ training “ today. The requirements will have something as simple as a window replacement require inside and outside plastic tarping and tapedowns of up to 10 feet, HEPA filtration, distributing brochures, obtaining signatures, keeping records for several yrs and risking jail time and yes, $35K+ fines for non-compliance.

So as usual.. those who do it “ right “ or at least by these new and insane rules... will have to increase prices dramatically and risk losing more business to unlicensed gypsies who won’t.

This will give illegal aliens a leg up. they won't comply and will beat the competition on price evading taxes and regulations. See if the government will enforce the rule on them.

Everything is being done to kill law abiding legitimate business. The commies are in charge.

Bet ya’ the new “accredited trainers” and new-to-contracting workers
are unemployed ACORN workers...that get Federal hiring priority.

Yep. Although the EPA ruling was on GWB's watch, I would not be surprised if Obama's minions are going to make it as painful as possible for us, but beneficial to illegals and unions.

Read MikeGD's (a contractor who will have to charge more) post #10:

I'll give you three guesses. Is this going to add red tape and bureaucratic BS to local governments?

I guess we will find out if they send us a registered letter. If you request 100 permits for a 600 sq. ft. job, they might get suspicious.

Anybody think that the Obama regime will spawn some underground economic rebels?

Look at this EPA link: Also, beginning April 2010, federal law will require contractors that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and schools, built before 1978 to be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Therefore beginning in April 2010, ask to see your contractor’s certification.

How about if you just go ahead and paint the bathroom without getting a permit? What if you just figure it’s a free country and you can do as you like with your own property - maybe just sort of just pretend that you live in a free country?

I suppose it’s off to prison then. Or worse be forced to give your money to violate everything you stand for - maybe to abort babies. Oh, wait. You’re already required to do that just for existing...

keeping records for several yrs and risking jail time and yes, $35K+ fines for non-compliance.

But no punishment for illegal aliens who steal your identity. That sounds about right.

Not sure, see #17. That’s just an EPA brochure though, the law might be worse.
