VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico - Dozens of gunmen mounted rare and apparently coordinated attacks targeting two army garrisons in northern Mexico, touching off firefights that killed 18 attackers.
The attempts to blockade soldiers inside their bases -- part of seven near-simultaneous attacks across two northern states -- appeared to mark a serious escalation in Mexico's drug war, in which cartel gunmen attacked in unit-size forces armed with bulletproof vehicles, dozens of hand grenades and assault rifles.
While drug gunmen frequently shoot at soldiers on patrol, they seldom target army bases, and even more rarely attack in the force displayed during the confrontations Tuesday in the border states of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon -- areas that have seen a surge of bloodshed in recent months.
The violence mainly involves a fight between the Gulf cartel and its former allies, the Zetas, a gang of hit men. The cartel -- which has apparently formed an alliance with other cartels seeking to exterminate the Zetas -- has been warning people in the region with a series of banners and e-mails that the conflict would get worse over the next two to three months.

“18 gunmen die in attack on two army bases in Mexico”
Good start...
Los stupidos.
HAHAHAHA...MUERTE...MUERTE...MUERTE
Should start happening along the border states sooner rather than later. And if our soldiers get medieval on the drug dealers’ buttocks? They’ll probably be arrested and court-martialed for violating their Constitutional rights as undocumented workers. Just watch.
Kudos to the Mexican Army on that one!
Take out the garbage!.....
It is true that many Spanish-speaking pharmaceuticals importers are misunderstood by racist homophobes such as yourself, Mr. Hydrazine.
Years of Republican neglect of investigating the healing powers of like totally organic herbal medications long known South of the Border were only meant to bolster capitalistic and heartless drug companies here in the US.
Yes, this is George Bush's fault. The border strife is also due to Global Warming. Like herbal medicative herb crop production is affected by smog blown in from Northern Aztlán SUV's and their massive Carbon Footprint. This causes drought and pests in the growing fields.
AIDS victims need those drugs, Mr. Hydrazine, to boost their appetites when taking outrageously priced antiviral drugs manufactured by greedy drug companies in New Jersey. And so do potential Glaucoma victims such as myself. Not to mention the poor, who cannot afford drugs anyway.
Again, Bush's Fault. So Jack. Step Back and let the selfless herbal pharmaceuticals experts of old Mexico help us, out of the love they feel for us.
Very clever........
Wow....they found the few Mexican army soldiers who haven’t defected to the drug cartels....
18 less future illegal aliens for Obama and McCain to give Amnesty to....
There is a Mexican farmer over here right now whose employees have all been taken hostage, the Federales in Chihuahua are in on it. He has a farm in the next state so he contacted the Federales there, they said they’d help him but it would cost him more than the ransom he is being asked for.
All things the lamestream media would have you believe were bought at US gun shows and gun stores.
As for illegal immigration, well OK, then, Have you seen my lawn? We need more of it NOW!
There is no cure for stupidity, Jack. But you can treat the symptoms by not saying anything.
I’m stuned........
Look at what has been happening to our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe FReepers should have stayed silent about them? I just base my forecastes on current events and what the trend is behind it.
It’s not stupidity. It is called having an agenda. You should know the dif.
If your agenda makes you say stupid things, it may be time to concede that your agenda is stupid.
If nothing else, your "defense" of your previous statement is about as ridiculous as the original offering.
This was a test folks. They were repelled, which is good, but they will try again.
I have said many absurd things that have ended up coming true. You just have to see the patterns which then make it easy to know what the next level of absurdity will be.
