Open for drilling is one thing. Big oil will snap up leases and then sit on them so as to keep anybody ELSE from drilling and thus keep oil prices high. I'll believe it when he MANDATES drilling and then mandates more refineries be built.

For us or some communist regime? Bull crap...it’s a ploy. What he will start doing is putting into practice some free market principles to smooth things over until November.

If they're actually opening up vast areas for drilling, this is a good move. It's hard to justify a ban when the Canadians and Brazilians are drilling away off their Atlantic coast and not wrecking the environment. Haven't seen the details but they'll probably leave it up to the states to decide where drilling is allowed, which means Florida would probably allow it only in deep water 35 miles or more offshore while Virginia might allow drilling 15 miles offshore because they have a much smaller tourist industry than Florida. I would think that on a typical day a drilling rig is almost invisible 20 miles offshore...just a tiny speck in the distance that looks like a ship.

Even though it will takes years to explore and produce from new areas, this can have some effect on the psychology of the oil markets and cut back on oil storage for higher prices in the future. But we'll see how much acreage is actually opened up for drilling. This could be a political set-up for a radical CO2 cap and tax bill.

<Coming soon to a union shop near you - Big Government Oil.

Yup. We’ve got Big Gov Cars, Big Gov Health, Big Gov Student Loans, Big Gov Banks, Big Gov Appliance Replacement - people think this is all great until they turn around and there is no more free economy in the country and Big Gov controls every aspect of their lives.

That was my first thought. Possibly an MSM attempt to simmer his sheep down.

Drilling will be delayed for years anyway and is contingent on Congress passing a huge Cap and Tax Energy bill.

Exactly. But this also has RINO written all over it. I'd better not find out that RINOs made their own backroom deals to pass Cap & Tax! I can't take much more crap, I'm going to implode!

Apparently you need to read some good Oil & gas Journals. Go to the library and see if you can get: Oil & Gas Journal, E&P Magazine, Oil & Gas Investor or some others. Stunning discoveries being made offshore, by the BIG oil companies and smaller ones. Please don't suck up the MYTH that Obama and Co promote, that BIG oil just sits on leases.

Those projects take years to come to the point of sinking a drill string a mile or two in the water, then another 5-10,000 below the ocean floor.

Cost anywhere from 100-200 MILLION. Know anybody who is gonna drop that kind of money without some serious science, logistics, permitting (think EPA), etc. ???

With the possible exception of the three largest oil companies in the world, that strategy would be self-defeating. Every other oil company can make more money by producing more oil rather than preventing other companies from producing it. Anadarko, Hess, Plains, Chevron, Noble Energy, and numerous other companies are rockin’ in the Gulf of Mexico right now. There is a huge amount of drilling and infrastructure building going on out there and oil production is increasing in the newer fields. Our problem is that older fields continue to deplete and decline in production naturally, especially offshore in places like Mexico and Canada. But no, there’s no incentive for the independent E&P companies to sit on leases and not produce. It takes time to do seismic surveys, drill wells, and build production infrastructure, but they’ll do all of that as quickly as they can if the oil is out there.

My take as well. I've already heard Salazar is thinking about raising Fed Lease Royalties from 12.5% to 22.5%; a nice and convenient 10-15% severance tax to help out the poor folk pay the new HIGHER costs of energy could fit right in nicely, with that "old time populist" appeal.

Exactly, good call! This is campaign mode rhetoric. His inner circle is triangulating, testing focus groups, formulating what pushes people’s buttons.

Just get past November with his lemming Congress intact is all he is thinking.
