As you know, beginning in 2014, all individuals must have a qualified insurance plan, or pay a tax. Congressman Weiners protestations to the contrary notwithstanding, that tax will be enforced by the Internal Revenue Service as the tax imposed shall be included in a taxpayers return. And, we all know who enforces information on tax returns. But, I digress. We dont have the specifics, as the Secretary of Health and Human Services hasnt written them yet, but we do know some things about a qualified plan.

We also don’t know if one spouse will be able to carry coverage for the family. That’s the way we have it now - as my hubbie works for a health ins co. It was nice to be able to tell potential employers that I wouldn’t need to be covered by their plan. I haven’t seen anything addressing this situation.

As the article states, it’s one that’s larded up with all kinds of stuff that some families may not need, or even want. Of course, there will NOT be the option to have just a Catastrophic Plan, that lets customers pay, from a designated Health Savings Account, any costs up to, let’s say, $20,000, then only kicks in after that. That kind of plan might even encourage people to stay healthier, since they’re paying for everything basic, like doctor visits, basic tests, etc. But since the folks who would prefer that kind of plan might be ‘the rich’, we can’t have THAT, can we?
We have a winner...
The “fun” will begin as soon as the draft regulations hit the Federal Register. Every health profession under the sun will begin a campaign to have the draft modified to include its services [or more of what is already covered]. Emails will go out to every member of each profession to pelt the Secretary with letters about why the nation’s health will be at grave risk unless [x, y, z services] are added to the must-cover category.
This should add another thousand or two to everyone’s premium.
