Staffers to a top House GOP member sought to clarify an earlier claim of political violence against him Friday after police determined that a bullet shot at his local campaign office was the result of random gunfire.
Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, told reporters Thursday that a bullet had been shot through the window of his Richmond office - supposedly part of an escalating cycle of violence and threats in the wake of Sunday's sharply polarized health care reform vote.
Richmond police later determined, however, that Cantor had not been targeted by political opponents. Instead, they concluded, the incident was a consequence of "random gunfire."
"Given a recent spike in threats against Representative Cantor, he, his family and his security were concerned the bullet found in his campaign office was related to a number of violent e-mails and phone messages, many of them anti-Semitic and some of them threatening gun violence," Cantor spokesman John Murray said.
The congressman "was very happy to find out that police attributed this particular incident to random gunfire," Murray said. Now "we need to move on."

Cantor’s office acknowledges that it really was a stray bullet. They say “Time to move on.”
But I bet this isn’t the last we hear about this incident.
Therefore, Cantor;s accusation of violence directed towards him were just inaccurate, rather than intentionally misleading.
What?????
How do they explain that someone wes “randomly” standing in fron of his office shooting a gun? Hello?
If you had all of the details and information that the police had, you might understand their labeling it as “random.”
Bullets, even 22LR, can travel for miles and still have enough energy to do harm.
That bullet might have been fired into the air from quite a distance away and the police are pretty good at figuring that kind of stuff out.
Don’t care. Cantor also said he had been subject to threats because of his Jewishness...and his conservatism.
The fact is: hate speech is mostly practiced by the LEFT. Period.
So, this is a non-story.
“That bullet might have been fired into the air from quite a distance away and the police are pretty good at figuring that kind of stuff out.”
Well, depending on how far the bullet landed from the window, (1 foot I read) They should be able to figure out about how far away the shooter was, shouldn’t they. Depending on the caliber, and the load of course.
If you read the story, you will find the explanation. Just follow the link.
If this happened to a Dem congressman, the MSM would be filled with stories of hate-filled, gun toting conservatives. Facts would be right out the window. Anytime a bullet goes through your window for ANY reason, its a big deal.
Don’t you find the timing a little suspect? That weekend, that office, during this particular controversy? It all seems a little fishy to me.
Gee what party does the city of Richmonds PD head belong to? Just wondering?
Ask yourself this: Is Cantor’s Richmond office really in a neighborhood where random gunfire is so common that if a bullet is fired into his office, his expectation should be “Yawn, just another stray bullet.”
Really?
Yeah, I think Cantor’s office realized that the chief was going to be a good loyal Dem here and he wasn’t going to get any justice from the police department, so better just to drop it.
Don’t be surprised if he’s the victim of another “stray bullet” in the future.
Sure, it gives me pause, but I don’t have any facts to make a judgment.
By what means and evidence did the Keystone Cops determine the shot was random?
***Cantors office acknowledges that it really was a stray bullet. They say Time to move on.***
I remember about 20 years ago a bullet hit the window of an apartment rented by a Supreme Court Justice. The media really tried to blow it out of proportion till it was proven by police that it was a random shot in the air that hit.
The bullet struck at a downward angle? How could they tell this?
In all probability they made this determination because there wasn't enough energy left to penetrate the blinds meaning only that they believed that it was fired from a distance.
How far would be determined by the caliber, casing, load and other factors. A .22 Short or even a .22 LR fired from a short barreled pistol from a passing car from across the street may not penetrate the blind.
A 9mm or .45Auto with a light target load fired from 75 yds away very well may not penetrate the blind and would be travelling in a downward trajectory.
Isn’t it so typical of the media to dig into this incident in an effort to question Rep Cantor’s motives......yet the democrat’s false accusations of TP people spitting and hurling racial insults at the Black Caucus is never so much as given a second look! They just run with the story as ‘fact’ even though there is proof that none of it ever happened.
The media is this country is corrupt and nothing but mouthpieces for the Obama administration.
Not to change the subject, but I briefly heard on Fox that one of the Democratic officals who claimed he had a brick thrown through his window had an office several stories off the ground. They said it would have been physically impossible to do. I have not heard anything more about this, does anyone else know how this panned out?
