Would partners of gay troops get benefits, too?

WASHINGTON (AP) - If gay service members are allowed to serve openly, the military will face another tough question: Should gay partners be entitled to military benefits?

Momentum appears to be building for ending the ban on gays in the military. New rules ordered Thursday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates make it harder to discharge men and women under the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell." His decision is intended as a stopgap measure as Congress weighs whether to go along with President Barack Obama's request to repeal the law.

Since the draft ended in 1973, spousal benefits have increasingly been used as an incentive to recruit and retain an effective force. Today, more than half of all troops sport a wedding ring.

Your elected officials are in the driver's seat.

My elected officials are....Osama Hussein Obama,John F'ing Kerry,Scott Brown and Baaaarney Frank.

My understanding is that Brown favors homosexual "marriage".But as an Army officer I don't know his position on DADT.

It’s a backdoor way for the gov’t to pay for expensive AIDs/HIV treatment.

Too old for the Army? Maybe. But not the Navy! I wanna learn how to land a fighter jet on a speck in the ocean about the size of a postage stamp.I could do that! ;-)

First of all, they’re not gay. They’re homosexuals. Second, they’re allowed to serve openly. While they’re serving, they’re not allowed to openly engage in the homosexual lifestyle.

Well, from what I hear being gay is dangerous so will they get both “gay” and “danger” pay? It’s dangerous because of all the hatred and discrimination by us evil straights.

Also they are more prone to diseases, domestic abuse and many other things.

Chaplains are brought on active duty to fully represent the ordained clergy of their sending denomination. They are subject to recall by their denomination via their “endorsing agency” which monitors their performance while on active duty.

A Chaplain, therefore, can be “fired” by either of his TWO bosses: his denomination OR his branch of service. Neither has to confer with the other to fire him.

If a Chaplain misrepresents his denomination, he will be fired from active duty by that denomination.

Therefore, if he performs a same-sex union, then his Catholic/Baptist/Assemblies/Methodist/Orthodox/etc. denomination will fire him.

Between a rock and a hard place, but, imho, US Code will rule when all is said and done. And US code requires him to perform his RELIGIOUS ministry; i.e., that to which he is ordained.

They probably increase the benefits proportionally to the number of partners.

I'm sure Zero will look into changing this if he ever finds out.

No doubt.

However, the real threat involving “gay marriage” will be the authority of ranking officers OTHER THAN chaplains to conduct marriages. For example, it’s long been known that a ship’s “captain” can perform a marriage.

I wonder if the federal ‘defense of marriage act’ prevents that from happening?

Zero will happily change any law in order to weaken the US military.

Under current law, no. The Defense of Marriage Act would prevent the Military (like any other Federal institution) from providing benefits to same-sex “marriages.”

In the long run, of course the repeal of DADT would lead to benefits for same-sex “marriages.” That’s the whole point. It’s unclear how this would happen - the Dems might try to use the “momentum” they build from repealing DADT to try to repeal DOMA, or they might use a military same-sex “marriage” as a test case to try to have DOMA - but it is inevitable that a repeal of DADT would lead to benefits.

Gays in the military?

If so, we are signing up for the whole program - gay spouse housing, gay pride, gay promotion organizations, gay sensitivity training, etc... etc...

"And Chaplains will be forced to sacrifice their careers if they refuse to perform gay weddings."

Probably not (I hope). I can't speak for all the branches of service, but the Navy regulations regarding Navy Chaplains specifically state (paraphrasing) that the Chaplain shall not be assigned (ordered) duties that are in conflict with his faith.

Unless that controlling regulation is changed - which I guess is not an impossibility - no one would compel a chaplain to officiate a marriage of anyone - gay or not gay.
