France To Ban Veil Says Nicolas Sarkozy Nicolas Sarkozy has said that France will ban the full Muslim veil.

The move would protect the dignity of women, the president added.

“The full veil is contrary to the dignity of women,” he said. “The response is to ban it. The Government will table a draft law prohibiting it.” The president gave no further details during his address to the nation following a heavy defeat in regional elections for his ruling Union for a Popular Movement party.

Speaking from the Elysee Palace Mr Sarkozy gave no indication as to how an outright ban would be imposed and policed.

France is home to six million Muslims.

I have a friend who went home to the south of France and she said it was very intimidating, the women in burkas and the men sneering.

This is different. Many of these are not even citizens, and the burkas are more of a political statement than a religious one. They are also a sign of female oppression.

It’s a touchy subject, but I don’t think it is as simple as “religious practice”.

If they are not citizens, deport them. According to some religions, women driving and appearing in movies is a form of 'female oppresion'. I think people, not govts should decide.

I brought this up to a liberal pal of mine tonight on Facebook, and she replied: “Why would Atheists seek to ban “all” religious symbols? Do Christians try to ban non-Christian symbols? Or Muslims non-Muslim symbols? What an absurd idea!”

You want to hear something interesting. A few months go, Poland discussed a law banning t-shirts of Che Guevera. A lot people here applauded it, I said it was wrong, no one listened.

A Polish court has ruled that it was illegal to say that abortion was murder.

That was wrong too. The same govt that can take away some one else's freedom of expression can take away yours.
