BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - A former middle-school teacher who stunned police with her unsolicited confession that she'd had an affair with a 14-year-old former student pleaded no contest Thursday to charges of unlawful sex with a minor.
Amy Victoria Beck was ordered to return to court May 7 for sentencing. Her attorney, Michael Williamson, said she is expected to receive two years in state prison.
Beck, 33, pleaded no contest to one count each of unlawful sex with a minor and performing lewd acts on a minor.
Originally charged with five counts of engaging in sex acts with a person under 16, Beck could have been sentenced to as much as seven years in prison if convicted.
When she walked into police headquarters earlier this month, Beck told detectives she had carried on an affair with the boy, now 15, for nine months last year. She said the relationship, which ended in December, had left her consumed with guilt. She still is, her attorney said Thursday.

Beck, who taught English and social studies, was popular with students, parents and fellow teachers, said Gabe Soumakian, assistant superintendent for the Burbank Unified School District.

Both, I think. I think its more likely to be reported when it happens, but I also think it is happening more. I think abuse by males has always been around, but abuse by females came with the so-called “liberation” of women, and with the children of baby-boomers becoming adults.

Must be a “man bites dog” thing. As soon as I read the headline I said to myself the teacher was probably female. I honestly cannot remember the last time I read a headline about a male teacher having sex with female students.
It's always been there I guess, especially in some of these weird cultures we have out there. But then it wasn't so prevalent or trendy in this country. It would appear to me that after Mary Kay Letourneau, the thing became something of an epidemic. There is no question in my mind, that a lot of these women have been doing it because they read about all these other women doing it, got ther curiosity piqued, and figured that there were lots more women nthat did it, and never got caught (which is probably true).

I agree. If there is one continuing disappointment for me here on FR it is this propensity to find someone "not guilty," or even "guilty," on the basis of a picture. We can think deeper than that.
