BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - A former middle-school teacher who stunned police with her unsolicited confession that she'd had an affair with a 14-year-old former student pleaded no contest Thursday to charges of unlawful sex with a minor.
Amy Victoria Beck was ordered to return to court May 7 for sentencing. Her attorney, Michael Williamson, said she is expected to receive two years in state prison.
Beck, 33, pleaded no contest to one count each of unlawful sex with a minor and performing lewd acts on a minor.
Originally charged with five counts of engaging in sex acts with a person under 16, Beck could have been sentenced to as much as seven years in prison if convicted.
When she walked into police headquarters earlier this month, Beck told detectives she had carried on an affair with the boy, now 15, for nine months last year. She said the relationship, which ended in December, had left her consumed with guilt. She still is, her attorney said Thursday.

Beck, who taught English and social studies, was popular with students, parents and fellow teachers, said Gabe Soumakian, assistant superintendent for the Burbank Unified School District.

Is this actually a new phenomenon? Or, is this just more reported today than in the past? I don’t know the answer.

The pictures suggest she is an attractive young woman. But, she’s guilty.
I sentence her to be taken from this place and be brought round to my place.
Am I reading the article correctly? She was never accused, but instead just came forward and admitted to the crime because she felt guilty?
At least she has a conscience left.

I know she should probably go to jail, but as a former 14 year old boy...I doubt I would’ve been traumatized by an affair with this gal.
Summer of ‘68 , I was an 8th grader, the English teacher was a real blonde cutie from South Dakota, sweet as the morning dew, I got a B from her.
Nothing ever happened.. oh well.
As to today, I blame Hollywood myself and the internet. Damn you alGore.

It is just hard to believe. Why would an attractive young woman who had it all do this?
I would honestly bet it's just reported more. In the past, teachers would be quietly drummed out of their position and nobody except those in the community where it took place knew about it. It certainly wasn't national news. Today's audience, though, is hungry for news that's a little more salacious and tabloid. That's way these stories get printed.
Though there is a valid argument concerning the "extended adolescence" that today's young adults find themselves experiencing where 20 and 30-somethings are still acting like teenagers and developing relationships with much younger people with whom they share the same level of maturity.
WHERE were these teachers when I was in school????
