AKRON, Ohio - The man who police believe gunned down a local soldier last week made a brief court appearance Monday, Fox 8 News reports.
A judge set bond at $1 million for Efrem Recardo Johnson, 50, of Akron.
Johnson is charged in the death of U.S. Army SPC, Jacob Carl Courie, 24, of Akron.
Police say Johnson was arrested without incident at his place of work on South Main Street in Akron on Friday night.
Akron Police Chief Augustus A. Hall says detectives and officers from the Akron Police Department "worked around the clock" to solve the homicide.
Through extensive analysis of surveillance tape - that captured the scene - and numerous interviews, they were able to identify Johnson as the gunman, police say.
According to Hall, further investigation revealed that Courie had been involved in two separate verbal altercations with Johnson while walking on East Exchange Street Wednesday night.
After the second confrontation, Johnson allegedly pulled out a shotgun and shot Courie in the abdomen, police say.
Johnson then fled the scene. Courie was taken to a local hospital where he died a short time later.
Chief Hall says Johnson has been charged with aggravated murder. He is being held in the Summit County Jail
