MIAMI (CBS4) ;
A local Republican running for office in November is already involved in controversy. Corey Poitier, who is running for a congressional seat, is taking heat for comments he made that have been interpreted as racist against President Barack Obama.
"They are portraying me in the media as I should have a white hood on," said Poitier, to CBS4's Jorge Estevez at a coffee shop in Miami-Dade.
Poitier is accused of racism for comments made surrounding President Obama's new health care plan.
"Since it started in the Senate, to me, it is unconstitutional," said Poitier, referring to the Health Care Reform law. "Therefore, I believe it is illegal. Then I said these words, which were mine, 'Listen up Buckwheat, you did it wrong.'"
Critics thought Poitier was comparing President Obama, who stood behind the bill, to the character made famous on the Little Rascals TV show, and then immortalized by Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live.
"Can you understand how people would think that you called President Obama, Buckwheat?" asked CBS4's Jorge Estevez.
"I can understand that because I am a rational man, but to me it is such a stretch. I never said President Obama in the same breath as I was saying Buckwheat," said Poitier. He said the comment had nothing to do with the President.
"It means dummy or silly. To me that was it. There was no racism, involved," said Poitier.

For a minute there, I thought Robert Byrd had switched parties.
Thanks for posting the truth, that the media is hiding on purpose!
The MSM ‘race card’ crap is getting old.
Should I take offense when someone says the word “Alfalfa”?
Nice. I like this guy already.
One day, the only nonracist person in America will be Obama. To even remotely disagree with Obama, seems to mean to a lot of his goosestepping followers as racist.
This is over the top.
He should apologize....
... for disparaging Buckwheat.
Poitier is equivocating, and mealymouthing. Of course he meant the great zero, and he was 100% accurate.
Doesn’t everybody know the white hood folks were Democrats?
Photoshoppers working frantically... racing to post the first 0buckwheat pic. LOL!!
Has Dan Rather got “the buckwheats” over this story?
Here’s the media spin. Man, even a brother is now a rasist if he against health takeover

His answer should be a resounding, “so what if I likened Obama to Buckwheat? What’s the big deal?”
No more apologies. Free speech means I can be offensive if I want to. Just say it. The whole PC thing was a communist tool and I’m done with it. Communism and Black ghetto culture have ruined this country.
Can a black man call a half black man “buckwheat”?
Of course its unmentioned in the story, if they mentioned his being black, then there would be no story.
This is “journalism” don’t you know.
Baruckwheat
Actually, as I read his comment in its context, I would have concluded that the "Buckwheat" comment was directed toward the Senate in general rather than toward Zero.
Stop with the damn apologies already! You are enabling and empowering the media as alot of commissars!
