Three weeks to save Hollywood sign
Thursday, March 25, 2010 » 03:22pm
A conservation group says it has just three weeks to raise 3 million US dollars to save the iconic Hollywood sign from being razed by investors who want to build luxury houses on the site.
Tim Ahern of the Trust for Public Land says they feel they have a good chance of doing that.
The group needs to raise money to reach the 12.5 million US dollars needed to purchase the 55-hectare parcel of rugged land surrounding the sign from a Chicago-based consortium that has acquired rights to build four luxury mansions along the ridgeline.
Private donors to the fund include movie and television companies and Hollywood stars such as director Steven Spielberg and actor Tom Hanks.
Apparently it’s to save the land around the sign. Would not want to create some beautiful houses and provide much needed work to some pions would we now?
And how deep are your P-O-C-K-E-T-S?
Another thing that isn't here anymore.
I’ve hiked up to the sign. It’s not a pretty sign, from far away or close up, but if some people are sentimental about it, they can pay for it.
You’d have to take it up with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Back in 1949, the chamber contracted with the Los Angeles Parks Department to repair and rebuild the sign, and the deal included a stipulation that L-A-N-D be removed to reflect Hollywood proper and not the former Hollywoodland housing development.
In due course, among the sign restorers was, of all people, Alice Cooper-—who paid to have one of the two O’s restored, dedicating it to the memory of Groucho Marx.
LOL! Effing hilarious!
“preexisting condition known as OAS/ADHD (over acting syndrome due to ADHD).”
The whole post is awesome.
Isn’t there a simliar eyesore in South San FranSicko? Another tacky sign when you head north on 101 to San Fran?
I secretly like the sign actually and was born under it.
Alice is a conservative and golf nut.
Sometimes the icon doesn't have to be pretty. La Tour Eiffel is really not much to look at either.
You were pooped on a hill? Didn't that hurt?
Well Tom Hanks has donated. If Tom Hanks says it’s good, it MUST be good. He’s from Hollywood and knows what’s best for us little people.
Well, I was going to make a witty post with Hollywood translated to Spanish, unfortunately, guess what Hollywood is in Spanish?
Evidently it is still Hollywood.
Pooped?! This is how you refer to my having entered this earthly atmosphere??
I was not born in the bushes behind the sign, but in a Hospital with a good view of it. Not that I remember that.
(Just float the rumor and watch the $3 million appear overnight.)
La Raza? Fewer letters and less painting. Could be a trend.
That is cool.
Same here but they recently closed the road that leads to the sign as far back as November last year. I was trying to show my university fraternity mates about the time someone jumped off the letter L, I think.
If you drive up Gower to Sunset, you have a perfect vision of it....also, you’ll see Obama’s Socialist-Joker posters on the right side as well ROFL!
So - you were told stories you can't remember. What a surprise!
Please don't be offended. Every child is 'pooped'.
