"...Scientists, it seems, have come to an unusual conclusion about the phenomenon of today's 'pretty-boy' actors compared with the he-men of yesteryear. It seems that as the nation's health improves, women's tastes in the men they fancy softens.
When health is poor, women go for rugged, tough-looking men, who they expect will give them strong babies.
Hence, I suppose, in the Thirties and Forties, during the Depression and the war, they flocked to see Douglas Fairbanks, Victor Mature, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and, of course, Mr Uber-Macho, John Wayne.
But when a nation's health improves, and life expectancy rises, women become attracted to more feminine-looking men, who appear to have gentler natures to match their little-boy faces.
It's an odd theory, but universities have done their research with more than 5,000 women, and it seems that Zac Efron beats Sean Connery by a long shot: modern women prefer more cutesy-looking movie stars such as Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, stars of those Twilight vampire movies.
These boys cause squeals of delight from young girls and are mobbed whenever they appear in public.
However, as a young girl, that wasn't the kind of man I went for at all, and I'd say it was the same for most of the women of my generation..."

"I have to disagree with Joan on this. Russell Crowe, Clive Owen, Gerard, Butler, Daniel Craig...the list goes on! Also, most of the "pretty boys" she mentions are in their early 20s at the lastest and are still maturing. Seriously, Taylor Lautner just turned 18 - let's give him a couple of years and judge him again when he can grow facial hair!"

We've heard this before. In my personal opinion it has a lot to do with the fact that the leading men of yore came from varied backgrounds and often found themselves in Hollywood almost by accident. Nowadays, they're mostly cookie-cutter figures picked out of the chorus line.
But as the comment above points out, there are many exceptions.
So what exactly is Leo Dicaprio?
The girlie-men who run Hollywierd are picking girlie-men actors. The casting couch is still there.
The West has become enamored with girly men. Nothing more profound than that.
Clive Owen is alright I guess But in “King Artur” this guy:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Winstone was MUCH more manly.
EEEEW!
Ah, Clive Owen. Yes indeed. ;^)
Also, the Dane guy.
But Lancelot was kinda girly.
Working in a men’s brothel.
Earlier I would have considered Leo DeCaprio the ultimate “pretty-boy” actor.
But, since “Blood Diamond” and “The Aviator”, not to mention “Shutter Island” he’s started to grow on me.
I also got a kick out of how Johnny Depp had fun with the fey image in his Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.
Hm... Paul Newman was kind of ‘pretty’ back in the day too, wasn’t he?
Hollywood is infested with homosexual men, and just like when heterosexual men ruled Hollywood, it is their desires reflected on the screen, not women. There really is no other explanation for the cast of "Twilight."
Some sort of over-priced whipped-coffee-mocha-thingie slug.
But few of todays actors can hold a candle to them.
I am totally lovin’ Timothy Olyphant right now......
He was AWESOME in The Perfect Getaway, and we watched his new show Justified that started last week— tonight is the 2nd episode— AWESOME SHOW!!!! DAMN he is FINE in a cowboy hat....
in fact- we have “Justified Parties” now every Tuesday. Last week was Pizza, tonight we are doing Enchiladas....
Last week we had 7 of us, tonight we will have about 12.....all the college kids come here to watch it....LOL!!
Agree about Leo DeCaprio.
Wish they'd make up their minds.
