Late Sunday night, in a narrow and partisan vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the most significant piece of social legislation in over seven decades. It did so in the face of overwhelming and principled opposition from the American people. Large majorities of Americans oppose this legislation because it offends the historic American dedication to the principle of self-government. They understand that this new law will accelerate Washington's intrusion into our most personal and private decisions.
This is why opposition to this bill will only grow. Supporters of this bill argue that popular hostility will recede upon its passage. But, rather than cementing our descent into a European-style welfare state, last night's passage of Obamacare is best seen as a historic turning point, a true catalyst for real change.
I write to reassure our supporters, the conservative movement, and the American people at large that The Heritage Foundation will do all within its power to keep this issue alive in the public square and make the intellectual case for the repeal of this act. We will bring all our resources to bear on behalf of those who believe America is and will always remain the Land of the Free.
This, rest assured, can be done. The American people are never permanently thwarted. President Obama's health care legislation can and will be repealed.

If there is one good thing about the past year - one in which we have witnessed unprecedented horse-trading, press stunts, midnight votes and political manipulation in both houses of the U.S. Congress - it is that the American people have come away educated as never before about the differences between these two visions for America.

Then why was that in the bill?
One of the things that Republicans proposed was that private insurance be sold to individuals across state lines. Basically, you get a health insurance policy for yourself and no matter where you work or where you live, you can keep that policy. The Democrats rejected that.
The whole ideas that you get health insurance as a benefit tied to your current job comes from the Democrats (FDR). It's a bad idea for precisely the problem you mention. Lose your job, lose your insurance. If you get sick while looking for another job, your next employer may decide not to provide health insurance for you -- you're already sick, so it would be a foolish business decision.
It's a real problem. The Republicans have the solution. The Democrats block the solution and perpetuate the problem.
The moral is, no option can be looked at in isolation but only compared to others.
That’s nice that they worked with her for a payment plan....
If feelings could make things be, we’d gladly give you the formula and we would all live in a self generated utopia.
Many doctors will, if you are in tight straits.
Thank you for your serious and polite response. Now, what is this about state lines?? Aetna is one company that is country wide....how is this state limited?
Most Doctors and Hospitals do that for people who can’t get insurance. That’s the point.
If you have a pre-existing condition now, Doctors and Hospitals are more likely to work with you.
When everyone has Government run “insurance”, Doctors and Hospitals will be prevented by law for making specials deals with those that need financial help.
Exactly right. Even the poor who will be getting the freebies aren't going to get quality care. Do you think the poor woman collecting welfare is going to get a top notch specialist if she gets cancer? She'll be lucky to get a nurse's assistant to look at her. Barry is promising what he cannot deliver.
Much of the time the insurance doesn’t reject outright, they just charge more and have a one-year exclusion on the condition.
And you're tremendously naive if you think that putting bureaucrats in charge of your healthcare decisions is going to result in some wonderful panacea. Soon those same bureaucrats will be denying care far more ruthlessly and far more capriciously than any health insurer.
The business about not crossing state lines is a legacy of existing law. It did have the virtue of not raising the question of whether the government can do what it just tried to do. Now I buy my auto and homeowner’s insurance from Iowa; but I could buy it from Connecticut or Florida if I wanted. That gives me more choices bidding for my business than if I could only buy it from my residential state of Illinois.
Why did you stop?
If you find a fantastic policy in Nebraska, you have to reside in Nebraska to take advantage of it. The policy you will be offered where you live is not likely to be quite so wonderful. And if you move to Nebraska, you will be changing to a new policy (even if you stay with Aetna) and will be re-evaluated. If Aetna in Florida covers your diabetes, but you move to Nebraska, Aetna in Nebraska may decide not to cover you.
Crossing state lines changes things.
“Thats why they call it insurance! If you could wait until you have cancer to go and buy health insurance they would call it capitulation. Do you think you should be able to buy homeowners insurance after the fire has already burned half your house? Should you be able to wait until you cause a wreck before you buy liability insurance on your car? Should you be able to buy life insurance on Grandma while she is in the hearse?”
Well put.
You don't have to preach to me about government-run anything.....I've been there and seen what a joke it is, not to mention them intruding into our lives. I can guarantee one thing, if we all end up with govt insurance--all of our records will end up being public access.
Imagine if your auto insurance was tied to your job. If you quit that job, or lost that job, you lost your car insurance. And since you can’t legally drive without auto insurance, you would have to get another job to be able to drive.
Ridiculous, right?
Well that’s how the laws have set up health insurance.
Now, imagine that if you need an oil change, you need to contact your auto insurance who will negotiate a price for that oil change with your local garage (and they only work with certain garages in your area, so you have to make sure your garage in on their list). They will pay for your oil change and in return, you just have to pay a $20 co-pay on your visit to the garage on that day.
Ridiculous, right?
Well that’s how the laws have set up health insurance.
Now let’s say that you get a new job in a new State. But the rates for AAA in your new State is higher than the rates for Allstate, so when you get to your new job you have to break from your AAA plan and get a new Allstate plan, because that’s who your new job has contracted with. So, off you go looking over your plan, hoping it covers alignments because your car has been pulling to the right and hoping that it covers one of your local garages.
Ridiculous, right?
Well that’s how the laws have set up health insurance.
There is an expression “jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.” Meaning leaving an uncomfortable situation by means of getting into an even worse one. That’s what Congress did Sunday night and Obama did this afternoon.
