AZ-Sen. 2010: McCain fights for Arizona Senate seat (McCain only fights conservatives)
Financial Times ^ | 2010-03-18 | Edward Luce

Posted on 03/17/2010 8:07:55 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

John McCain is not normally good at concealing contempt for those he believes are deserving of it. But when it comes to J.D. Hayworth – his rightwing challenger for the Arizona Republican nomination for this November’s Senate race – the former presidential nominee does not even try.

Earlier this week, Mr Hayworth, a former talk radio conservative, made the latest in a series of gaffes when he said that allowing gay marriage would enable people to marry their horses.

(snip)

“I mean, Caligula [the debauched Roman emperor] only made his horse a consul – nobody talked about marrying his horse,” says Mr McCain in an interview with the Financial Times. “You can’t make this stuff up.” And yet, Mr McCain is also proof of the dictum that you either run scared or you run unopposed.

In spite of having a 20-point lead in the polls, Mr McCain is taking Mr Hayworth’s challenge very seriously.

(snip)

“There is a strong anti-incumbency mood in the country – you have to take every race seriously,” says Mr McCain. “Approval ratings for Congress are down to 12 per cent. You have to expect the unexpected.”

(snip)

They point to Mr McCain’s reluctance to champion immigration reform, an issue that he once pushed hard, and on which he strenuously denies he has diluted his position. They also point to his retreat from support for legislation to bring in a cap and trade regime for carbon emissions. Again, Mr McCain says that he has not changed his views and is awaiting a genuine conversion by Mr Obama in favour of nuclear power – a requisite, he says, for the “all of the above” approach to energy.

Rasmussen released a poll on Jan 20th showing McCain with 53% to JD's 31%. McCain released a poll a week later 59 to 30. Hayworth released a poll the same day showing McCain leading 49 to 33. The poll you site is from Nov of last year.

McCain has $27 million cash on hand. In 2004 McCain spent a little under $5 million to win with 77% of the vote. He can afford lots of very accurate internal polls. Clearly there would be no advantage for McCain to release polls showed him losing support. If McCain's internal polls show a gain he has no advantage in advertising it either. The last polls showed McCain trouncing JD...if JD is destroying himself, or McCain's attacks are not being countered, releasing that information is just warning JD and the rats.

The media would love to see that seat go to the rats. The rats are doing robocalls to 250,000 AZ voters and calling McCain a rich health care hypocrite, but they can't come up with a poll to breath life into JD's campaign and run their own Operation Chaos, because they know McCain has his polls. If JD is stalled and the media release a fake poll showing JD gaining ground there is still no reason for McCain to release the real numbers and warn JD to change tactics.

JD has no poll to offer and show any positive movement. It would most definitely be in JD's best interest to release a poll showing his campaign had some traction. The primary is Aug 24th. JD raised $100,000 in the last week...at $100,000 a week JD would have about $2 million raised by election day. JD spent 3 million to lose his rinky-dink congress seat in 2006.

They are politicians - all alike and they get worse the longer they hold office. We need citizens who want to serve their country, not themselves.

They serve NO LONGER than 2 terms so they know their gig will be up and will face their community and the real world. It could make or break them.

“The Britishers put their foot into it yet again. Talk about deliberate distortion. JD said nothing of the kind. Moreover, JD has’t made a ‘series” of gaffs.”

So, they’re trying the ‘oh, he’s stupid’ routine again...I see.
How does anyone get any stupider than John McCain?

The poll you site is from Nov of last year.

Correct.
Rasmussen has had only 2 polls. One with JD within 2 points of McCain, and the other(from January), with McCain ahead by 22 points. The point is, JD hadn't even entered the race yet when the January survey was done. Plus that poll had Simcox with 4%. He's since withdrawn and thrown his weight behind JD. Lets see what the next poll says with both JD and McCain campaigning instead of just McCain doing the campaigning shall we?

McCain has $27 million cash on hand”

Not according to the Senate Guru. According to him, McCain had $5,681,155 at at the end of September 2009, so unless McCain has managed to raise to the tune of over 20 million in just 5 months, your figures are incorrect.
http://www.senateguru.com/diary/1100/q3-2009-take-and-endofseptember-cashonhand-fundraising-numbers

In 2004 McCain spent a little under $5 million to win with 77% of the vote. “

This is not 2004. The political climate has totally changed. Just go ask Martha Coakley in Massachusetts.
Congressmen who promote job destroying cap and trade, amnesty, Geneva rights for Guantanamo terrorists like McCain, are out of favor everywhere.

If JD is stalled and the media release a fake poll showing JD gaining ground there is still no reason for McCain to release the real numbers and warn JD to change tactics”

Rasmussen don't do fake polls. If there is movement in the polls, we will see that in the polls in the coming months.

JD raised $100,000 in the last week...at $100,000 a week JD would have about $2 million raised by election day. “

Martha Coakley initially had a heck of a lot more money in the bank than Brown did, and he was ahead by 20 pints with just over a month to go to the polls. In the end, it didn't matter. Coakley was on the wrong side of the issues and the wrong side of history, just like McCain is on the wrong side of the issues right now. McCain needs to be retired, so he can go plant tomatoes in his back garden. He has done too much damage to conservatives in this country in the last 8 years already.

Yup.
The favorite tactic of the liberal media pinheads when it comes to every sngle conservative candidate. They did that to Reagan. Did that to Bush. Are going that to Palin. So what's new?

How does anyone get any stupider than John McCain?”

Nope. He is as stupid as they come, and his dunderhead daughter is even stupider. Only thing is, they think they are smarter than anyone else, especially, conservatives. Delusional.

$27 million cash on hand John McCain: Campaign Finance/Money - Summary - Senator 2010 | OpenSecrets

You're entitled to the rest of your opinions, but I would find them more compelling if you didn't use Liberals’ Five Favorite Republicans RINO Brown as an argument for disgust with RINO McCain.

I wouldn't have a problem with JD as AZ Senator, but it ain't gonna happen. Resources should be spent in states we can take from the rats.

$27 million cash on hand John McCain: Campaign Finance/Money - Summary - Senator 2010 | OpenSecrets

That figure you quote from opensecrets runs counter to every single figure I have seen from everyone else, by a margin of over 20 million dollars.

CBS February 22, 2010 12:42 AM :
“While McCain's campaign has approximately $5 million cash on hand, Hayworth has been capitalizing on media appearances to increase the visibility of his edgy, outspoken persona. “
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-6230152-503544.html

National Journal Monday, Oct. 19, 2009 (derived from FEC filings for the 2010 cycle ending 9/30/09):
McCAIN (R) 5,681,155
http://www.nationaljournal.com/hotline/po_20091019_6098.php

These are from SEC filings, which trump open secrets. I am gonna find it hard to credit the $27 million cash on hand figure from opensecrets. You might want to email your pals at opensecrets on that one.

You're entitled to the rest of your opinions, but I would find them more compelling if you didn't use Liberals’ Five Favorite Republicans RINO Brown as an argument for disgust with RINO McCain.”

That's a bit rich coming from you, given that it's John McCain, who has been running a scorched earth campaign against JD, using every single loony left talking point in the business, including calling JD a racist for opposing illegal immigration, and attacking JD for being a “birther’ when JD pointed out that it's perfectly legitimate for voters to demand to see 0bozo’s BC, just like any other president.

Resources should be spent in states we can take from the rats”

Since McCain more often that not, votes with the RATS anyways(including voting against the Bush tax cuts), using resources against him sounds pretty sensible to me.

After a bit f digging, I see where the discrepancy lies. It would appear that McCain has $22M in his GELAC account.
A General Election Legal and Accounting Compliance (GELAC) account,
“may be established by such individual prior to being nominated or selected as the candidate of a political party for the office of President or Vice President of the United States. Before April 1 of the calendar year in which a Presidential general election is held, contributions may only be deposited in the GELAC if they are made for the primary and exceed the contributor's contribution limits for the primary and are lawfully redesignated for the GELAC pursuant to 11 CFR 110.1”

http://www.nationaljournal.com/hotline/po_20091019_6098.php

So obviously, this is not money McCain my use for his US senate campaigning.

“there is no difference between the Republican party and the Democrat party”

Hyperbole.

There is a huge difference. Just look at the ObamaCare debate...a few more Republicans and we wouldn’t be sweating out this Sunday.

Also, look at Brown in Mass. He is not even close to being conservative, yet he fried Obama’s bacon on the ObamaCare and continues to do so and get media attention doing so.

So, I call BS on your “Republicans Party and the Democrat Party...have no differences” line.

As we expected, JD has pulled within single digits of McCain. From being behind by 22% in the Jan 20 poll, JD is now pulled to just 7% behind McCain. Today's Rasmussen poll has it at, McCain 48%, Hayworth 41%. Not bad going by JD at all.

When we fight McCain/McShamesty, seems we are clearly fighting the GOP machine and it’s $$$$, which FAVORS AMNESTY. I think that’s why we have so many freepers and politicians (like Palin) who are diehard GOPers that also favor path to citizenship amnesty. I keep seeing the same group here...they seem to also oppose Beck, who spoke out, and, as rabid GOPers they seem to be the same who scream loudest against any hint of a 3rd party. They must be scared to death.

Comparison to the Rasmussen Massachusetts special U.S. Senate election poll on Jan 5, with just 2 weeks to go to the elections on Jan 19:

“2010 Massachusetts Senate: Coakley 50%, Brown 41%
Tuesday, January 05, 2010”
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/massachusetts/2010_massachusetts_senate_coakley_50_brown_41

Coakley was ahead of Scott Brown by 9 points with 2 weeks to go, and still got clobbered. By comparison, JD is only behind by only 7%, and has over 4 months to overtake McInsane.
The other comparison would be to Rubio against Crist in FL. It started off with Crist ahead by a massive 22% (same margin McCain was a head of JD by on Jan 20).

August 19, 2009
2010 Florida GOP Primary: Crist 53%, Rubio 31%
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/florida/2010_florida_gop_primary_crist_53_rubio_31

Within 2 months, Rubio had closed the gap to 14 points
October 21, 2009
2010 Florida GOP Senate Primary: Crist 49%, Rubio 35%
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/florida/2010_florida_gop_senate_primary_crist_49_rubio_35

4 months after the first poll, Rubio was even with Crist:
December 15, 2009
2010 Florida GOP Senate Primary: Crist 43%, Rubio 43%

On Feb 1, 5 months after the poll which had Crist ahead by 22%, Rubi has overtaken Crist:
February 01, 2010
Florida GOP Senate: Rubio 49%, Crist 37%
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/florida/florida_gop_senate_rubio_49_crist_37

So far, I'd say JD is moving on a faster overtaking trajectory than Rubio did. Rubio only managed to close up on Crist to 14 points from the 22 point deficit in 2 months, JD has managed to close his deficit from 22 points to only 7 points within 2 months. The next Rasmussen poll 2 months from now could prove very good news for JD. I am going to be looking for a deficit of 3 points or less if JD keeps attention to business. All the massive million dollar McCain attack ads haven't done him any good.

If I were McCain, I wouldn't be sleeping too good at night.

Great comparison you did. I agree, if McCain just read your post, it would be enough to keep him awake. It’s like JB is taking on Goliath in the political world, but we know the ending of that story! Thanks for the good news.
