Catholic adoption society wins fight to be exempted over gay rights

Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent

A Catholic adoption society has won a High Court battle which could allow it to go against legislation forcing it to consider gay couples as adoptive parents.

Catholic Care, which serves the dioceses of Leeds, Middlesbrough, and Hallam in South Yorkshire, launched the legal action saying it would be forced to give up its work finding homes for children if it had to comply with the legislation.

Other Catholic agencies have already given up adoption or cut their ties with the Church to comply with the rules which came into force in 2007.

The Catholic agencies were given a 21-month transition period to adjust to the new regulations and by January last year, five of its agencies had cut formal ties with the Church to comply with the rules. Related Links

The Catholic Children’s Society, Westminster, decided to end work with new adoption and Father Hudson’s Society, in the Archdiocese of Birmingham, announced it was “demerging” its adoption recruitment and assessment into a separate charity after an unsuccessful appeal to the Charity Commission.

Catholic Care was seeking an exemption from the Sexual Orientation Regulations to allow it to continue to operate as it had always done.

Its plea to be allowed an exemption was opposed by the Charity Commission.

But today Mr Justice Briggs, sitting in London, allowed Catholic Care’s appeal and ordered the Charity Commission to reconsider the case in the light of the principles set out in his judgment.

The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales were deeply angered by the impact of the regulations on Catholic adoption agencies. The Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols fought unsuccessfully to secure exemptions when they were going through Parliament.

Both Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. will not allow Catholic Charities to do adoption placement any more because of the gay laws that they have both passed.

So, if you are a young woman who wants to place her baby with a nice family (mother and father), you can't do that in MA or D.C. Your child may be placed with two gay men or two lesbians.

Amazing that the UK has some good news in the battle for morality, may the same happen here in the US.

They should be free to do adoption placement as long as they recieve no government aid. As soon as they take government aid then they are behlolden to Caesar.

If a woman wants to follow her faith or is choosey on where her kid may end up, the young woman deserves the choice.

This isn't an issue of "govt. aid". Both places have passed laws that effectively say that you cannot treat heterosexual and homosexual couples differently. In the eyes of the law, they are the same.

There is no "religious exemption" for the Catholic Charities. If they will not agree to give a child to a homosexual couple, then they are not in compliance with the law, and legal action would ensue.

The Catholic Diocese in these locales have decided to forego adoption services rather than place an innocent child with a homosexual couple. The young woman should have the right to choose; but, she does not. Political Correctness tops all other considerations.
