Russia to float out new nuclear sub on May 7

A new Russian nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarine will be floated out on May 7, a shipyard spokesman said on Monday.

Construction of the Severodvinsk, a Project 885 Yasen (Graney) class submarine, began in 1993 at the Sevmash shipyard in the northern Russian city of Severodvinsk but has since been dogged by financial setbacks.

"A floating out ceremony for Russia's new Severodvinsk nuclear submarine at the Sevmash shipyard has been scheduled for May 7," the official said.

Graney-class nuclear submarines combine the ability to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles (up to 3,100 miles or 5,000 km) with nuclear warheads, and effectively engage submarines, surface warships and land-based targets.

The submarine's armament includes 24 cruise missiles, including the 3M51 Alfa SLCM, the SS-NX-26 Oniks SLCM or the SS-N-21 Granat/Sampson SLCM. It will also have eight torpedo launchers, as well as mines and anti-ship missiles such as SS-N-16 Stallion.

Severodvisk is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy by late 2010.

Last year, work started on the second sub in the series, the Kazan, which will feature more advanced equipment and weaponry.

Russia's Navy commander, Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky, has said that the construction of new-generation nuclear-powered ballistic missile and attack submarines was a top priority for the Russian Navy.

Talk about getting ready to fight the last war, rather than the next.

The Russian Navy needs an SSGN for what exactly?

Said differently, couldn’t this money be better spent on say... anything in the world other than an SSGN?

Among the many reasons why we should immediately open up *all* our known (and suspected) oil reserves is that doing so would cause an immediate, sharp drop in oil prices...thus denying dangerous states like Iran,Venezuela and the USSR the ability to buy thousands of jets, missiles, subs, etc.

There are now so many subs in the ocean that it represents a naval buildup not seen since just prior to World War I, with its battleships.

33 nations are believed to have submarine warships. China and the US alone both have about 65-70 each. Many other nations have purchased very quiet diesel electric boats that represent a serious threat to surface ships.

This suggests that there is soon going to be a major push for submarine killing technologies.

Ya mean “submarine finding” technology don’t ya?
After all, killing subs is the easy part of ASW - finding ‘em is the hard part.

Hold on Russia is launching a 17 year old sub and this is worrisome? Do you work for Northrup Grumman or something?

“very quiet diesel”
This term is like saying “conservative democrat”

We have the best fleet money can buy and we some are worried about cheap diesel electric boats. I guess these people have never heard of SOSUS. It is so sensitive it can hear a whale fart.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Aren’t our own submarine forces being modified in such a multi-role manner?

SSBNs converted to modified attack boats with Spec Ops delivery capability?
Virginia-class subs with modular systems, capable of both the attack and missile-role?

Yes. We are modifying existing platforms for new roles.

We aren’t making new platforms with self-conflicting roles.

Plus eliminate any obstacles on coal-to-gasoline production, and engage in a massive program to build nuke power plants. The FRENCH, for God's sake, have been getting 70% of their power from nukes for decades. We can and should as well.

I think the Norwegians might know a thing or two about “very (VERY) quiet” diesel/electric subs.

Diesel is a descriptor for genre of sub that also has batteries. Incredibly quiet.

The Swedes have one that allegedly ran circles around us off San Diego recently.
