Hadrian's Wall lights up to mark 1600th anniversary of the end of Roman rule

The majestic Hadrian's Wall is an awe-inspiring sight at the best of times.

But last night it took on a magical new light as 500 flaming torches were dotted end to end along the 84-mile long Roman fortification.

As night fell, a group of 500 volunteers holding gas-powered beacons and standing 250m apart created a 30 minute 'line of light' in a spectacle to mark the 1600th anniversary of the end of Roman rule.

Too bad their aren’t any aerial shots from a distance, this would have been awesome to see.

OK, now THIS is cool!

I think I might have traveled there to see that, if I’d known about it in advance.

Maybe there is more photography - just wait a while and search. My father and uncle did a hiking trip of Hadrian’s Wall back in the mid-90s, before Dad’s Alheimer’s and my uncle’s stroke. They can both still talk about it, at least.

I’m still angry at the Romans for the oppression of my British and Celtic ancestors. I want reparations, with interest, from the Italians, and I want it NOW!

All I can find so far.

As Tax-chick says, I expect more will emerge.

That must have really been something to see. Thanks for posting!

There was an early 20th century childrens’ writer named Bryher who wrote what I thought was one of the best books on the end of the Empire. It starts as the child notices grass growing up between the stones on the Roman road. Very evocative.

"Better a year up the fundament of a Carthaginian Elephant, than another week on Hadrian's Wall..." (rumored grafitti, in Latin, inscribed on several points of Hadrian's Wall. I've long wanted to see the wall myself, to ascertain the validity, or not, of this rumaor...)

We loved Hadrian’s Wall, and intend to go back and walk it some summer. It’s just wonderful, this ancient thing, still standing.

The Roman conquet of Britain began under the emperor Claudius, who was born in Lugdunum (Lyon, France)...so maybe the reparations should be collected from the French.

True, Claudius was of Roman and Sabine ancestry, but I figure that if being born in Hawaii makes a Kenyan an American, being born in Lyon would make Claudius French.

Someone painted “Romans Go Home!” on it in huge letters, one hundred times.

My father and uncle were totally positive about their trip to Hadrian’s Wall. They also visited Viking Yorvik and some other sites in the general area. My mother and her friends have toured Britain, but they’re not hikers ;-).

I’m happy knowing it’s there, and having read Tacitus and some of the other sources. Maybe I’ll never go there, but I’ve “been,” in a way.

Logic accepted - anything that allows Brits to be angry at the French will be :)

“I’m still angry at the Romans for the oppression of my British and Celtic ancestors. I want reparations, with interest, from the Italians,...”

But the Italians abandoned the place, to go home and try to defend themselves.

The final succesors in Britain were French Vikings called Normans. So call Norway and Denmark, for your reparations.

They will probably tell you that you benefited from their “nation building” and the like.
