Britain's top policeman has expressed concerns about the huge cost to the taxpayer of protecting Princess Eugenie and other 'B-list' royals.

Scotland Yard chief Sir Paul Stephenson is looking at how best to use resources at his cash strapped force.

One area of concern in his budget is the cost of providing armed, round-the-clock protection to guard the 19-year-old princess - a renowned party animal - during her hectic first year at Newcastle University.

Insiders conservatively estimate it is £250,000 a year - including the salaries, accommodation, living and travel expenses of two full-time police bodyguards.

Having a royal family in the modern western world is like having a whale-bone corset: useless, out of date and painful.

“Princess Eugenie”
Never heard of her.
The royals are very, very wealthy. Let them provide their own security.

Its the police’s responsibilty to provide protection for anyone who is particularly vulnerable to attack by criminals and terrorists, which, whether you agree with the concept of Royalty or not, is what these girls face simply for being Royals.
The IRA murdered the Queen’s cousin Earl Mountbatten simply because he was a Royal and the Queen’s cousin, and don’t doubt for a minute that Islamic fundamentalists or republican extremists (the Irish or British kind) would if they had the opportunity, simply because of what they are...

Since the royal family is fantastically wealthy, they could pay it themselves.

£250,000 a year seems like a pretty stiff price for two guards.

British taxpayers have to foot the bill for her security? Not to be disrespectful but I wonder if your average working class citizens feels it's a good idea.

On the face of it, you are correct. However, the Police should charge the royals the cost of providing that security. In other words, if I am petulant enough to go to dangerous areas, if I expect the police to protect me (at least before the fact of a tradgedy) then I should be required to pay for that security.

Except the Royals didn’t ask to be born Royals. They just are. Considering that money for police protection is also spent on people in witness protection programmes who have often been total scumbags themselves before they agreed to testify against others, I can’t really begrudge money being spent to protect people who did not in any way ask to be placed in the position of being at risk of kidnap and murder because of who they were related to when you are born.
And considering that it would be more expensive if we had to pay for every different president and their family after they had left office if we had a republic, I don’t really think it is much of an expense in comparison to protect the members of ONE family....

That computes better. I suppose as a “party animal” she doesn’t sleep regular hours.
