More Democrats come out against health care bill [Four from KY, IL, SD and NC]
CNN ^ | March 12, 2010 | Charles Riley and Jeff Simon

As House Democratic leaders advised their members Friday to prepare for a legislative battle over health care that could stretch through next weekend, four additional rank-and-file Democrats have come out against the Obama administration's signature domestic priority.

Reps. Ben Chandler of Kentucky, Luiz Gutierrez of Illinois, Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin of South Dakota and Heath Shuler of North Carolina say they will vote against their party's health care plan, which may be headed to a final vote late next week.

"At this time, I am a 'no' vote on health care," said Gutierrez in a written statement. "It's no secret that I have been critical of proposals that would exclude our nation's hardworking immigrants from the health care exchange, and I would find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to vote for any measure that denies undocumented workers health care purchased with their own dollars."

According to an ongoing CNN survey, 21 House Democrats have now indicated they will vote against the Senate bill when it comes to the floor, though six of those members say they would consider voting for it if it were significantly modified. Opponents of the bill need a total of 38 Democrats to vote against the measure to ensure its defeat, assuming that all Republican members remain unified in their opposition.

Some members made clear that their votes are not negotiable. Josh Taylor, a spokesman for Texas Rep. Chet Edwards, told CNN the congressman "voted 'no' on health care the first time around and will vote 'no' the second."

Proponents of the health care plan need 216 votes in order to pass the Senate plan. As of Friday, no Republicans said they would vote in favor of the bill, which would mean Democratic leaders must rely solely on votes from its own members.(continued)

“I’m sure that Bella Pelosi will be able to flip Gutierrez. She’ll just give him a wink,a smile and a promise that this is just step one and there’s plenty more leftist crap to come.”

Have you been hearing that they’re throwing in the billions in student loan program money...starting to be reminiscent of the bribery in the Senate...?

In any case, it’s really hard to tell what’s going on...and that’s just the way they want it...

Deceivers...traitors...commies...

Is there any provision in this bill that would require that it be reviewed by the Supreme Court? They’re pissed at Obama now for dissing them in the State of the Union speech.

"I’m sure that Bella Pelosi will be able to flip Gutierrez."

Probably right. They don't come much more lefty than Gutierrez. And it's not that he fears reelection.

An executive order can be undone by the next executive.

???

I don't understand.. Is there currently a practice by health care insurers to check the citizenship of people who apply for their insurance? Or, will it be mandated under the Democrats' Mengelecare program that insurers check for US citizenship? If so, why?

Color me real confused.

Yes. All revenue bills must start in the House. This one started in the Senate. That’s why DeMint refusing reconciliation was critical. The U.S. Supreme Court getting dissed at the SOTU? Well, that may remind Kennedy to read his Constitution.

“Blue Dog Democratic congressman Scott Murphy (D-NY-20) — who was one of those Democratic Blue Dog votes against the original health bill in the House, hinted today on the New York NPR radio Brian Lehrer show, that he would be a switch to being a “Yes” vote.”

Scott Murphy, a no vote in the fall, is slipping away to a YES vote.

I have heard that the bill is dead, but then I hear that the bill is still alive. What the heck is going on and does anyone have a tally going of yes and no votes?

I heard Bret Brair on Fox news say that there are 211 that will vote for it and that is not enough to pass it. Anyone else see this?

Whether a person is a US Citizen or not will not be a question on the questionnaire.

It’s always good to hear such announcement, but will be better if we know the vote switching (both ways).

The only advantage to have it shrouded in so much mystery and intrigue is that it’s very close, or they’re negotiating who’s going to commit hari kari on behalf of MAO-bama. As such, I don’t think we’re going to get accurate vote counts, unless and until they actually vote.

I’ve wondered, if Obama simply said “my health care bill was approved in principle by both the house and senate, so I’ve written an executive order to implement the common parts”, if the media would praise him for it.

I’d love to see Hussein TRY and put that through as an executive order, vet. He is learning, I think, that his Chicago thug way of doin’ business doesn’t work in the nation as a whole...and if he just tried to assume the power, his haughty power trip would come to an end real quick.

I think you’d see even a dozen Democrat senators ready to walk away from him. Of course the kooks like Boxer and Sanders would go along.

Where the hell is Joe Lieberman in this? Why isn’t he being pilloried as a Hussein sycophant? Seems like THAT is what he is.

Wow ... what the heck is going on?

They're holding out for more special deals, pork, bribes, etc.

Yup, that's what I think also, Cementjungle.

We HAVE to keep fighting this monstrosity... it ain't over yet.

When some rat says “At this time, I am a ‘no’ vote”, it only means they are waiting for a bigger bribe.

Yup.
