Whoa, “Chattanooga Choo-Choo”! There are World War II vets alive today who remember the war in the context of that song and “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree”.

Hoagy Carmichael wrote “Stardust” as a fast ragtime tune early in the century. Somebody slowed it down and turned it into a standard. The voice introducing the number is — I think — Benny Goodman.

Greetings Freepers time for the Saturday Sortie, once Again EL GRAN SALSERON get credit for tonights Sortie. Tonight's Sortie is on the Consolidated PB2Y Coronado.
After deliveries of the PBY Catalina begin in 1935 the US Navy began to lay plans for the next generation of Patrol Planes. In 1936 orders were placed with Consolidated and Sikorsky for next generation prototypes. The first of the PB2Y Coronados flew in December 1937.
Flight testing of the XPB2Y-1 which featured a single tail revealed some stability issues the design was finalized as the PB2Y-2. The -2 featured twin tails, a cantilevered wing and Wright R-1830 radial engines. Like the PBY before it the wing tip float retracted in to the wings to help reduce drag and increase range.
The PB2Y-3 model featured self-sealing fuel tanks and additional armor entered service just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The -3 was the main model with about 300 being produced in various versions of the -3.
The Coronados served in the Pacific in the bombing and anti-submarine role however transport and hospital planes were much more common roles. The RAF Coastal Command had hoped to us the PB2Y as a maritime patrol bomber, unfortunately the range of the Coronado at 1,070 mile compared poorly to the PBY Catalina at 2,500 miles and the Short Sunderland at 1,780 miles. The 10 Coronados were converted to transports and operated on a trans-Atlantic route staging through Darrel's Island, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. The routes extended along both sides of the Atlantic coasts from Newfoundland to Brazil and Nigeria and other African Ports.
In US Service the Coronados were relegated to transport duties where they served as a major component of the Naval Air Transport Command. By the end of WW-II the Coronados which were outmoded as bombers and transports were quickly scrapped. Of the 10 PB2Ys in RAF Coastal Command service after the war 5 were scrapped, 1 had been lost in an accident with a Martin PBM Mariner and the other 4 were scuttled off the coast of Bermuda in 1946. Oh the horror!!!.
Only one of the Coronados survived and it is at the national Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Florida. Well on With the pics...
We lead off tonights pictures with this shot of a Coronado getting ready to take off.
A nice inflight picture of a PB2y, from the insignia I would guess this was taken before 1942.
Another inflight shot of a Coronado as a patrol plane, those look to be a nose and upper turret but I do not see any machine guns. This picture probably taken after 1944 from the insignia.
Another inflight pic courtesy fo Life magazine.
here a PB2Y takes off with a JATO assist. Note the wing tip floats are down for water work. Also that the two inboard engines have four bladed props while the outboard engines have three bladed propellers.
And we close out tonights Sortie with this picture of the only surviving PB2Y. This is a -5R model according to the tail fin, which makes it a Coronado that had benn converted to the transport role from a patrol bomber.
Well we hope everybody has a great week out there. Stay safe and we will see you next weekend if all goes well.
Regards
