The Obama administration intends to step up enforcement of civil rights laws that apply to schools. Education Secretary Arne Duncan made the announcement in a speech in Selma, Ala., timed to commemorate the 45th anniversary of civil rights marches there.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan signaled Monday the Obama administrations intention to step up enforcement of civil rights laws that apply to schools and colleges, many of which are often ignored.
In remarks delivered in Selma, Ala, timed to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the marches in which civil rights protesters were brutally attacked by police, Secretary Duncan said, The truth is that, in the last decade, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has not been as vigilant as it should have been in combating gender and racial discrimination and protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities. But that is about to change.... We are going to reinvigorate civil rights enforcement.
In particular, Duncan discussed the Education Departments plan to issue guidance letters to schools across the United States, as well as its intention to conduct numerous compliance reviews around issues like discipline and equal access to educational opportunities.
He highlighted certain indicators that point to inequities existing today:
Upon finishing high school, white students are about six times more likely to be college-ready in biology than African-American students. In algebra, theyre four-plus times more likely.
Just 12 percent of high schools produce half the dropouts in America. Three-fourths of African-American and Latino come from those schools.
African-American students without disabilities are more than three times as likely to be expelled as their white peers.

One way enforcement, of course.
The civil rights of white heterosexuals is not protected.
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Instead of worrying about “civil rights,” how about focusing instead on actually educating the children...teaching them the practical skills they need, such as basic math, reading, writing, history, geography, science? These days, public school education is about indoctrination, not education.
Thank Juan McCain and McCain-Feingold “law” for the 2006/2008 Dem Congress and 2008 Obama election.
IOW, more politically correct prejudice.
Several family members are teachers. According to them only 1 in 10 parents are engaged in helping their kids with school work.
Education takes many forms as you suggest. Then beyond that are moral lessons as an example....

The next thread.
‘civil rights protesters were brutally attacked by police’
I knew of a few of these protesters who were brutally attacked while living in Montgomery in the early 80’s.
Their FIRST HAND recollections:
1) They got beat while MLK was in a hotel with hookers.
2) MLK ONLY walked/protested when camera’s were around.
3) Not ALL the cops were brutal, many cops tried to move the protesters through the area to protect them from the corrupt elements.
4) Many whites were sympathetic to the protesters cause and did what they could do(covertly) to assist them.
5) The protesters bitterness was focused on the brutal cops and the various leaders of the Civil Rights Movement who took credit while the protesters were doing the dirty work.
Of course white male Christians had better home school.
5, 10-year old African-American and very bright girls were constantly interupted by discipline problems last year
So, another place to start with your latest reform is to separate the bright kids from the discipline problems

A steaming pile of horse dooey. These so-called indicators have nothing to do with prejudice or favoritism of one race over another. The children don’t learn because they don’t want to. And they don’t want to because their parents, teachers and administrators don’t care. For example, if your parents don’t read to you as a child, you are going to be less likely to read yourself. Many successful individuals of various ethnic and economic backgrounds became successful because they were encouraged to get an education. Race has nothing to do with it.
Obama, like Sharpie Sharpton, Calypso Louie Farrakhan and the “REVEREND” Jackson, is a racialist - an individual who seeks power through the manipulation of imagined racial insults and stereotypes.
I remember an Oprah Show where it was suggested that you close the achievement gap by stopping to teach White students.
but it was only required through grammar school, and only about reading (especially the Bible), writing, ciphering, history, and the US Constitution.
Interesting reference, a Constitutional Catechism.
Hey mom, I wondered if the homeschool list would be interested in a link to the Constitutional Catechism written in 1839:

There is no reason whatsoever for there to be a federal department of education. This is a declaration of war against decency and morality. The pervs are running the show and are going to poison the mind of the next generation unless the public stops them.
Just one more - this one has free pdfs, etc:

Somebody’s got to take education back from the unions and progressives before that “Ministry of Propaganda” fatally damages our nation.
Wouldn’t work, because too many of the parents of those students would make sure they learned anyway. A lot of kids’ success in school depends on their parents after-schooling them to fix the gaping holes in their education. You’ll read about it on FR threads all the time. Those parents would, if the government stopped providing the free education, see that their kids learned anyway and the achievement gap would still exist.
