House liberals force vote on pullout from Afghanistan
The Washington Post ^ | March 9, 2010 | Perry Bacon, Jr.

Liberals in the House, who have spent much of the past year complaining that other congressional Democrats and the White House are insufficiently progressive, will get a chance this week to vent about one of their biggest concerns: the war in Afghanistan.

House leaders will allow three hours of formal debate, probably Wednesday, on an antiwar resolution written by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio), one of the leading antiwar voices in Congress. The resolution, which has 16 co-sponsors, calls for the United States to remove all of its troops from Afghanistan in 30 days -- or by the end of the year, if it is determined that trying to do so in a month would be too dangerous.

The resolution will invoke the 1973 War Powers Act, which Congress passed in protest of the escalation of the Vietnam War by a series of presidents without formal congressional authorization. It requires congressional approval for a president to put troops in a military conflict for more than 90 days. Congress passed a resolution authorizing military force in Afghanistan in 2001, after the Sept. 11 attacks, and some congressional scholars doubt Congress can invoke the act now to force changes to President Obama's war policy.

Whether or not it would have any legal force if enacted, the resolution has almost no chance of being approved in the House, where nearly all Republicans and many Democrats support maintaining or increasing troop levels.

But the lawmakers supporting the resolution, a group that includes antiwar Republicans such as Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.), say Congress needs to have a formal debate on the war.

Not for the same reasons but this old warhorse is ready to bring them all home. Not only from Afghanistan but the entire ME and Europe and Asia. Bring em all back, retrofit them to be ready to go back in and do it the right way under the next administration.

I agree, but not for the same reason. The handout generation doesn’t deserve their protection.

I’m actually in favor of pulling out too. My reason, however, is that Afghanistan is officially Islamic by law. Since Islam is the real problem why prop it up? Until a nation makes it the law of the land that any religion is equal to any other the US should not be helping it!

At first blush I disagreed with you. But were it possible to do as you suggest I would be for it.

I totally agree with you.
We've been in the Middle East for close to 9 years now. How much longer do we need to stay there?
The "job" should have been finished at the end of 2002. I don't want our troops to promote "democracy" or nation-build anymore.

Do you not understand that the current administration is doing nothing but propping up an Islamic government?

Do you also realize that the current rules of engagement are in place to create failure? McChrystal is a problem as well, not a solution.

If US forces were allowed to kill the enemy then this could have a different outcome.

Whats new with the Lefties. A Blast from the past. Remember the fight against the commies in elSalvador?
“Direct military aid by the United States was interrupted by the Boland Amendment, passed by the United States Congress in December 1982. The Boland Amendment was extended in October 1984 to forbid action by not only the Defense Department and the Central Intelligence Agency but all U.S. government agencies.”

One thing about Dummies, they never change their stipes.

There won’t be a next Adm. if we don’t win this war
and keep rounding up the IslamOfascists.

The enemy is in the U.S., Europe, all over.
They are especially armed by Iran, countries who have nuclear weapons.

It takes one of them with a small device to take out a shopping center killing hundreds or more.
Or, subways, trains, planes.

I watched live on TV the second plane go into the WTC on 9/11.

This isn’t a cowboy movie, this is real and serious.

We've been in the Middle East for close to 9 years now. How much longer do we need to stay there?

Been in Germany how long? Japan how long? Korea? Everywhere we have been for decades is not only passive, but allies.

On the other hand, we've "pulled out" of the shores of tripoli, Philippines, Lebanon, Somalia....all basket cases.

I don't know if it's the answer to your question, but one possible outcome of "bringing all our troops home" could just possibly be that the planet gets consumed with another World War.

No doubt that it's a pitiful state to have our boys protecting the rest of the world.

Unless that is the least bad option we have.

Having many relatives over the past several years and still in Iraq and AFghn. I hear first hand.
They know why they are there and don’t want to be pulled out.

Also living here in San Diego with the largest concentration of military in the world.
I also talke to friends in the military.

To many on FR rehash the left wing talking points.
