Sudden spate of layoffs hits Middle Tennessee

Six Middle Tennessee companies officially reported mass layoffs in the past week, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported Monday.

Companies are required to report to the state when they plan to layoff 50 or more workers, and they are encouraged to report smaller layoffs to alert the state to people in need of job assistance. Between March 1 and March 8, the six Middle Tennessee companies announced that they have eliminated or plan to eliminate a total of 279 jobs. That represented 78 percent of the 356 job losses that were reported statewide.

Some of those job losses have been anticipated for months. The single biggest — 120 jobs that will be eliminated in April at the Borders distribution center in LaVergne — was first reported in November.

Lockheed Martin Flight Services also announced plans in November to shut down its flight service facility at Nashville International Airport, which eliminated 28 jobs last month.

And Axiant LLC, a legal debt collection company that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November, said it eliminated 51 jobs in Nashville last month.

Celestica, whose Mt. Juliet facility packed and shipped computer peripherals (Dell was a major customer), told the state it plans to close its Nashville facility on April 15, laying off 43 workers.

Sears Holding Co. will shut down its store at Shady Brook Mall in Columbia on May 9, eliminating 24 full-time jobs. Another 32 part-time workers also will lose their jobs.

Schreiber Foods Inc. also said it eliminated 13 jobs last week at its cream and butter producing facility just north of LaVergne.

There's an eye opener.

The government sector is hiring using money from the “future”.

All “unexpected” during this “recovery,” right?

Obama flushed the economy and it's slowly turning round and round the porcelain bowl.

I’m missing your point. That’s a map of Arkansas’ voting patterns, and while it’s encouraging, I don’t see how it ties to Tennessee?

By Democrat standards that's a full blown economic recovery going on in Middle Tennessee.

Now if only 0bamacare would pass these companies would hire 1,785,432,000 employees. ( 1,785,432,000, I came up with that figure after consulting Joe Biden.)

B-B-But I thought we were recovering. It was all gonna be okay. Jobs are being saved. Jobs are being created. It's gonna be great. Maybe they ran out of shovels in Tennessee.

!!!!!unexpected!!!!!

The borders jobs is probably a combination of season jobs and a fact that more people are using those computerized book readers like kindle. The Dell jobs well that speaks for it's self.
