First Amendment be damned . . . If Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn had his way, any journalist who called Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez a dictator would quickly find himself behind bars.
Penn, appearing on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" on Friday, defended Chavez during a segment in which he detailed his work with the JP Haitian Relief Organization, which he co-founded.
"Every day, this elected leader is called a dictator here, and we just accept it, and accept it" said Penn, winner of two Best Actor Academy Awards. "And this is mainstream media, who should -- truly, there should be a bar by which one goes to prison for these kinds of lies."
It was just the beginning of a busy weekend for Penn. When asked on CBS' "Sunday Morning" about those who question his motives for his humanitarian work in Haiti, he said:
"Do I hope that those people die screaming of rectal cancer? Yeah. You know, but I'm not going to spend a lot of energy on it."

Just asking
His mental deterioration must be almost unbearable for him to start snuggling up to Chavez.
BTW, Sean, Chavez is a dictator. You are nuts.

Class? How about a brain? Sean Penn is now officially an idiot.
I think actors who beat their wives should go to jail.
Sean Penis a member of dramatic arts royalty.
Pennis known to go deeply into his male characters.
In fact Pennis milking (Sean always milks these situations) Harvey, the guy Penn brought to climax with Oscar last year (and the man Penn got fully behind and whose depths Penis still plumbing), still prolonging and extending the experience of draining every last drop out Harvey Milk - and enjoying every minute.
For this, Pennis considered as a legend and ass queen of the screen.
That’s funny, I want reporters and film critics jailed for calling Sean Penn an “actor”.
This moron can’t die of an overdoes soon enough for me.
very good
Oh, come on. Compared to Penn, Spicoli is a towering intellect.
But Penn had to abandon his plan when the boat he was piloting sprang a leak. Penn frantically bailed water with a red plastic cup.
“My head! It’s HOLLOW!” - Jeff Spicoli
Yeah, his interview was going pretty well, until HE volunteered that , uh, “vivid” scenario for his critics,
wanting them to die screaming of rectal cancer.
(Yeah, I know, he just overstated it to make a point)
Kind of jerked you back to reality when you realized it was after all, Sean Penn we were talkin’ about here.
Then, just so you’ll remember exactly who he is, he says something like this about Chavez. And what he says should be done about Chavez’s critics is exactly what Chavez has already done to his critics. Penn, like Oliver Stone, just has a thing about dictators. Maybe he gets a tingle up his leg.
Sean to have class would have to go back to school. This is why idiots progressives need to have a cranial-rectal procedure done.
Au contraire. The story is very complex because of the many elections held in the last couple years of the Weimar Republic. However, for the last two fully free elections the Nazi Party was by far the largest party, receiving 38% and 33% of the vote respectively, with the next largest party at 22% or 20%. In addition, Hitler had allies that scored 8% to 12% of the vote. Since the Republic had a parliamentary system of government, the voters were well awware a vote for the Nazi Party was a vote for Hitler, especially since the Nazis were such a hierarchical party.
In the June 1933 elections, which were semi-free, the Nazis got 44% of the vote, with their Nationalist allies bringing in 8% to give the coalition a solid majority. In other words, Hitler's party received a solid plurality three elections in a row.
It should also be noted that while the Nazis never got a majority in elections, neither did anybody else. The Weimar Republic was always ruled by coalitions. In all but the first federal election, the "winning" party recived less than 30% of the total vote.
Hitler then got several smaller parties to vote for his Enabling Act, which essentially rescinded the Constitution for a four-year period. This was perfectly legal under the Constitution, although obviously a really bad idea for the constitutionalists.
Perhaps I should have said that Hitler came to power by constitutional means, which is absolutely accurate, rather than that he was elected. He was constitutionally appointed Chancellor by the President, and then was constitutionally voted emergency dictatorial powers by the Reichstag.
The Nazis did not base their power on elections, so those held after their rise to power were pretty much a joke. However, outside unbiased observers estimated in the late 30s that if free elections were to be held the Nazis would have received well above 75% of the votes. Obsessing about the actual number of votes Hitler received is sometimes an attempt to obscure his truly remarkable degree of popular support. The Nazi regime was not forced onto the vast majority of Germans. They supported it voluntarily, although with the caveat that they knew the penalty for opposition.
By the way, you have really bad manners. If you disagree, try to do so with some degree of decorum. Your arguments do not gain credibility by using terms like "spewing" and "communist."
I helpfinance a ministry in Venesuela. It is a toilet, with little decent food, no economy(Chavez cronies run it). Basic staples are always missing. The people are treated like cattle.
Penn should be forced to live there for 2 months. The stupid SOB.
White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen has ripped Penn for this.
Calling him a “payaso” (clown) and “izquierdista estupido” (stupid leftist) amongst other things.
Saying it’s easy to defend Hugo when “you [don’t] live in Venezuela and have money. “
I could add a few more to that list, but the English translations wouldn’t be allowed on here.
Gee, aren’t liberals tolerant?/s
