At the end of a discussion of Haiti on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, actor Sean Penn went on a rant in defense of Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez, suggesting prison time for American journalists: "every day, this elected leader is called a dictator here, and we just accept it! And accept it. And this is mainstream media, who should – truly, there should be a bar by which one goes to prison for these kinds of lies."

Well, no one is stopping him from exercising his right to move to Venezuela to be with his little buddy. I’m sure he’ll fit right in.

I love the way some here believe what you are saying. I don’t.

It makes about as much sense as the same folks here...maybe you are one of them Nat...who think the GOP was always conservative and the Dems always liberal devil dogs....I even saw a freeper last week bash Jefferson as a bad Democrat.

Sorry, I don’t buy it.

About all Facism has in common with Marxism is a partial government ownership of some essential industries and a control of liberties. Beyond that are many distinct differences.

People who think beyond platitudes know this.

Fascism is just socialism with a nationalistic bent.

Mussolini was chairman of the Italian socialist party until he saw French and german socialists support their governments' push towards war. He then saw that "the Socialist International was dead," and assimilated an extreme nationalism into his socialist/Leninist philosophies, calling it "Fascism."

Left/right should be more accurately reframed as liberty/coercion.

Fascism is just socialism with a nationalistic bent.

Fascism was the name adopted by Stalin to differentiate his form of socialism from Hitler’s. The media was quite happy to oblige old Joe and copiously followed his direction always noting Hilter as a fascist and Stalin as, well, as a communist. To the highbrows, there might be a smidgen difference in the idea of “ownership” but the operative fact remains the rule was the same. Hitler was a racists, Stalin a racist and classist. Between the two there is very little difference - they were both narcissists with a megadose of meglomania thrown in. Which one did the most harm - answer, Stalin; Hitler was defeated physically and ideologically. Stalin continued to deform and distort humanity and had a mutligenerational impact.

Go read the intellectual roots of Fascism, communism and anarchy.

They were all ba$tard children of the German Romantic movement and French Enlightenment while British Classical Economics and the Napoleonic Wars served as the midwives.
Now if you think that the German National Socialist party was not a FASCIST movement I don't know what else to say other than have a nice life in the collective
The first political success of Fascism in the modern world came from Mussolini, who was a former socialist and adopted much of their ideas into his policies.

The National Socialist German Workers Party aka the Nazis took even bigger pieces of the leftist agenda. (Lebensborn, May Day celebrations, Volkswagen etc etc.)
So before your feelings get hurt I will make the explanation so clear that even the mushy middle moderates can understand. The left is all about collectivism and total control and subjugation of the individual it does not matter if it comes in a red commie banner or a black fascist armband. The far right is the least amount of government (i.e. no Government) or Anarchy. Just because your college professor was embarrassed by the 1939 Molotov–Ribbentrop do not project those sentiments on me.

If you want to discuss why RINO's suck or why I do not trust demoncraps or moderates we can do that if you like.

Hitler made plenty of speeches of how he wanted Germany to be a classless society.

Fascism was the name adopted by Stalin to differentiate his form of socialism from Hitler’s.

Perhaps so, but "fascism" is an Italian creation, coming from the Latin word fasce, or "bundle."

Various Italian revolutionary groups adopted the Fasci name prior to Mussolini, who organized the group Fasci italiani di combattimento.

Hitler was no Marxist, Mussolini's earlier socialist tendencies notwithstanding.

Just one example is that communism allows for almost zero private property whereas the Nazis and other Fascists allowed plenty.

Yes, they allowed private property but regulated almost every aspect of that property and rigged it so NAZI party members were advantaged in any business dealing.

Yes..to some degree. Fascism is pure crony capitalism at the high end....Fripps, Krupps etc..and state ownership or control of energy

Marxism is no private property....even the ranking apparatchik’s dachas were not theirs.

I confess to being old school...right wing extreme on one end can develop into authoritarianism

and leftism on the other does rather than can...lead to totalitarianism

yes they are similar but also distinct....as in a fascist is not an anarchist

I was taught a number of political models in the 70s, I can't say I find the circular model inspiring...nor the axis models either

myself...I am a right wing nationalist with a strong rightist cultural bent...so I would naturally be more inclined to say a monarchy if it had to be rather than a collectivist utopia..hence..it's a linear progression in both directions for me...pulling away from one another in goals but perhaps sharing method on occasion.
