At first sight it was no contest. On one channel Sarah Palin, the poster-girl of the American right, was wowing audiences with her first routine as a stand-up comedian. On a rival chat show Mitt Romney, the early frontrunner for the Republican nomination in 2012, was delivering such dull fare that his host yawned.
Writing a book and promoting it on late-night television have become an integral part of a presidential campaign launch. It certainly worked for Barack Obama.
For Romney, the tactic seems to have backfired. He may be ahead of Palin in the opinion polls. But 5.8m people tuned in to watch her on the Tonight Show last week, compared with 3.7m for his appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman...
When Letterman asked about his late father, a former head of American Motors and governor of Michigan, Romney went into a long ramble about his character and integrity.
When Leno asked Palin about her father, she replied: My dad hell tell me what kind of ammunition to use.
At one point Letterman seemed to yawn as he listened to Romney, a committed Mormon and former investment banker. I dont know what any of that means, he said after one opaque answer.
Romney, who failed to shine in the 2008 primaries to choose his partys candidate for the White House, was later asked about losing the ratings battle. I need to get better material, he quipped.

I thought the juxtapostion in the article of the answers about the two father spoke volumes. Palin's was a redblooded American response and funny to boot. Romney's was canned and predictable, repeating a few cliches he had memorized about integrity. What a loser.
Ping!
Oh Man!! She is a joke!!!!
“She is a joke!!!!”
Welcome to FR. Now back under your rock.
I wouldn’t be too sure. I think Americans have had their fill of amateurs and Romney’s not an amateur although he’s probably no great stand up comic. Palin is widely viewed as unqualified. Personally, I’m not impressed with either one. I’m hoping for a conservative candidate with experience AND charisma. Don’t ask me who that is. I’ll know him/her when I see them.
That would be your Neo Leftist Ron Paul is a joke, NewBie
A newbie Ron Paul loon (I checked your posting history). Go away.
“I think Americans have had their fill of amateurs and Romneys not an amateur”
No. He is a professional...destroyer of health care in Massachusetts, traditional marriage. He is not the kind of professional I want anywhere within 100 miles of the Oval office.
You say Palin is “widely viewed as unqualified”. On this site, and any conservative site, Romney is unanimously viewed as unqualified.
Maybe we should let the Euro weenies pick all of our Presidents , they did such a cracker-jack job selling Obama as the anti-Bush .
This coming from someone who thinks Ron Paul is a genius?
I think you have a point. I am not so crazy about Romney, but am not at all interested one way or the other whether he would make a great stand up comic. It is a sign of how shallow politics is becoming when we are comparing the chances of two potential Presidential candidates based on how they perform as stand up comics on late night shows.
You're going to be waiting for a LONG time...
“Maybe we should let the Euro weenies pick all of our Presidents”
The fact that they can recognize Palin’s talent and Romney’s deficiencies does not amount to them “picking our president”. It proves that their senses of sight and hearing are working. Is there something wrong with yours?
(((PING)))
Ron Paul = Ross Perot without the good looks.
I believe I mentioned I wasn’t impressed by Romney. So, your point would be?
