Average Americans have lives, and the vast majority of them have concerns and interests that go far beyond politics and the ideological and partisan food fights that people in the business dwell on. But even the people who are not glued to political talk shows, and who don't read newspapers or watch television news, have a sense that the system isn't working and hold a growing mistrust of elected officials from both parties.
I average about 250,000 miles of air travel and visit several dozen states a year. In addition, as part of my job, I pore over mounds of polling data. It's pretty clear to me that this sentiment is pervasive in every corner of the country.
That is why this is something that Republicans should be thinking about too. In 2010, they will be the beneficiaries of this political environment -- my hunch is that no more than one incumbent Republican in the House or Senate will lose re-election this November. But like the proverbial dog chasing the car, catching it presents another problem. If Republicans manage to win 218 House seats in November, they will no longer be the beneficiaries of this anger and impatience.

Republicans held on to power for 12 years in part because in the 1995-96 session of Congress, they used it for purpose and the nation benefitted (unfortunately, Bill Clinton benefitted, too). But afterwards, they only used their position to feather their own political nests.
If Republicans regain Congress, will they learn from their past misakes?
The RINOs have no plan. They are ass hats. We need real conservatve leadership to get the job done. Otherwise the Republican party is kaput, finished, no more.
If they don’t immediately start implementing plans to massively cut back the size, scope and cost of government, they will be booted out and we can look forward to a third party. The cost of inaction is too great. People want solutions, not blaming it on the last guy whether its Bush, or the Bamster or Dingy Harry Reid or hysterical Nancy Pelosi. If the republicans can’t lead they too will be discarded. And they damn well better start thinking about what life without the Fed is going to be like because that place is about to implode anyway.
Men like Bill Frist who left his practice as a heart and lung transplant surgeon, hardly feathered his own nest and men just like him make up the bulk of the Republicans in Washington.
Men like Randy Cunningham are the exception. He was a gym teacher before becoming the only flying ace to come out of the Vietnam war and I can understand how lobbyists and contractors could influence someone like him. That doesn't excuse him (and he's in JAIL!), but show me ten crooked Democrats and I'll show you, maybe, one crooked Republican.
These blanket GOP statements are dishonest, uninformed and pushed by Democrats.
>I pore over mounds of polling data.
As opposed to pooring over mounds of data? ;)
*sigh* - Pour, the word you want is pour.
pore - 1. To gaze intently or searchingly.
2. To read with profound attention; as to pore over books.
3. To reflect deeply and continuously; as, to pore on the mysteries of nature.
*sigh*
Check, mate.
They did use their positions to push for more spending and pet projects which accomplished nothing but helping them in reelection. While they didn’t benefit financially, they did reap short-term political benefit, at the expense of the taxpayers. That’s what I was referring to. If they win control of Congress this year, they need to do things differently.
Duke Cunningham was not the only flying ace to come out of the Vietnam war.
Steve Ritchie and at least 16 North Vietnamese pilots come to mind. I know there were others.
...do things differently.
Yes. Stop spending. Repeal the layers of crap heaped on us the last 15 years. Strengthen defense. Rein in the EPA. For starters.
What dictionary did you get that from? IIRC ‘pore’ is as in a [sweat-]pore.
Indeed, that is one of the uses of the word “pore.”
My source is Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Fifth Edition, published waaay back in 1947.
If you are going to assume the mantle of one of those irritating Grammar Police, please do your homework first.
. . . and a whole lot Here:
Ping
You need to quit falling for the "everybody does it" nonsense and the manufactured crap about "earmarks".
I should have said Cunningham was “first” flying ace to come of the Vietnam war. Obviously there were more.
