6 UW-Milwaukee students were detained this afternoon during a tuition rally, 15 of which were arrested.
The rally began at noon in the UWM Union and moved towards Chapman Hall, home to the offices of many top UWM administrators, where the students were arrested. UWM Police Chief Michael Marzion said the various charges against students include obstructing justice and disorderly conduct.
During a press conference, Marzion said that the protest became violent and students were attempting to force their way into Chapman Hall. He said that police made a decision to not allow students into Chapman Hall because a large crowd of protestors would be disruptive to the work environment inside. Pepper spray was used against some of the students.
Among the detained was UWM Student Association President Jay Burseth. Marzion said Burseth was released and will not be charged. Burseth said that he wanted to speak to police as head of the student government.
I wanted to go there and find out what was going on. I figured maybe if somebody could calm them down it could be me, he said.
Burseth also told the Post he was detained for no reason and that others may have been as well.
It was questionable why a number of people were detained, he said.
UWM spokesman Tom Luljak said that the university welcomes protest and a wide range of views on campus. But he said, in this case, some students were determined to harm police officers and damage property.
The rally was part of the National Day of Action for Education Rights, which saw many similar protests across the country. The students demands, according to a flyer for the event, include a tuition freeze, pay cuts for high-level administrators including UWM Chancellor Carlso Santiago, and increased money for need-based scholarships.

Oh, to be an angry college student completely ignorant of reality once more................wait no, I wasn’t quite this clueless.
I bet you that these same students support the same government policies that have resulted in exploding and absolutely out of control tuition rates due to government financial aid...etc.

This is going on all across the country- in the 8-9 hour on CNN they were covering it live at Berkeley and in LA. Also one in Colorado and here in Florida at UCF.
I see another bailout(s) in our future...

In the video you can hear them chanting "no cuts, no fees, education should be free" then when the cops approch it's "the enemy is here"

These brilliant students need to read the newspapers (on-line or otherwise) and learn that there's a recession going on. Money is very tight and everyone is hurting. The days of very cheap education subsidized by taxpayers is drawing to a close. The states cannot afford it any longer.
The protests of the late 1960's got some sympathy because many were against the Vietnam War. There were other scattered protests at Berkeley and Columbia about other issues. The MSM was supreme at that time and the country didn't get the full story about these protests so there was sympathy as well.
This time it's different and nobody cares about these students. Everyone is hurting and people aren't going to put up with a bunch of bratty punks tearing up public property. People are much less willing to support public education when they see these demonstrations. These students are just too damn dumb to see this.
These demonstration aren't going to last long. Times are different now.

It would be easy to cure the affordability problem with Colleges.
No more women’s studies, no more black studies, no more any victimhood studies.
Fire all the extraneous staff and get back to basics.

The implosion is beginning. The “entitlements” that Politicians have used for 100 years to get votes and stay in their royal stations are now collapsing. There is no more money. It is GONE. It is time for THEM to pay for their irresponsibility, and it is time the taxpayers hold these thieves accountable for their felonies. Start with Robert Byrd, Charlie Rangel, and the rest of the entrenched royalty who need to be deposed and imprisoned for ruining this nation.

A few less College Students isn't all bad. How is that hope and Change working for your Tuition hike

Ah, brings back memories when college students (smartest people in the world with all of the answers) made demands for "justice", and caused enough turmoil to close colleges and universities throughout the country. I was at the University of Cincinnati at the time.
To: slorunner
Yes, at the very least that would be a good start.
College costs have gone up much faster than inflation during the last 20 years. There's no reason for this other than the existence of very cheap student loans AND the explosion of worthless programs and the hiring of worthless professors. Most of the big-time State Universities could cut back 30% easily without any decline in quality. At least 30% of the courses and curricular are absolute junk. I know this for a fact. I spend 6 years on college campuses. Granted it was a while back but in terms of waste, it's worse today than when I attended.
