WASHINGTON, March 5, 2010 – The Pentagon Metro station was closed soon after the shooting incident, and modified bus and train service resumed at 11:30 a.m. today. The Metro Entrance Facility and the upper bus platform remain closed, but the lower bus platform is open. All other buses will continue to drop off and pick up at the Corridor 3 “Kiss and Drop” location.

Pentagon workers who wish to catch a Metro train will need to leave the building via Corridor 3 and walk to the north escalator to access the train station. Security officers are positioned along the route to assist with directions.
The FBI, in collaboration with the Pentagon Force Protection Agency and Virginia’s Arlington County Police Department, are working to figure out why a California man approached an entrance to the Pentagon yesterday and shot two PFPA officers.
The lone shooter, John Patrick Bedell, of Hollister, Calif., was shot in the head and left arm during an exchange of gunfire outside the Pentagon, near the building entrance adjacent to the Pentagon Metro Transit Center, at about 6:40 p.m.
Bedell was transported to George Washington University Hospital and died at about 10 p.m. Two PFPA officers, Jeffery Amos and Marvin Carraway, were injured in the exchange. The officers were treated at George Washington University Hospital and released. A third officer also was involved in the exchange of gunfire, but that officer’s name is not being released at this time, officials said.
Bedell, who was 36 years old, is believed to have driven to Washington in a green 1998 Toyota Avalon that has been located and removed from a nearby mall parking garage. At the time of the shooting, he had a full beard and was dressed in slacks, a white collared shirt and a blazer.
Investigators are searching the car, conducting interviews and reviewing a video of the shooting in an effort to piece together a timeline of Bedell’s activities leading up the incident. Investigative efforts include reviewing Bedell’s possible internet activity, his cell phone usage and other information which might assist in determining Bedell’s state of mind at the time of the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone who believes he or she may have witnessed the shooting, or may have additional information, is urged to call the FBI at 202-278-2000.

Shooting Outside Pentagon Causes Lockdown

WASHINGTON, March 4, 2010 – The Pentagon was in lockdown for some time this evening after a gunman opened fire on two Pentagon Force Protection Agency officers, according to a statement released by the Defense Department.
The shooter fired at the officers at the entrance to the Pentagon Metro station outside the Pentagon building about 6:40 p.m., the statement says. The officers returned fire, injuring the gunman, it says.
The two officers and the gunman were transported to a local hospital. The officers’ injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, it says.
“The officers acted very quickly and decisively to neutralize the threat,” a police spokesman said.
The Pentagon Metro station, bus stop and Metro entrance to the Pentagon will be closed until further notice, officials said.
The shooting is under investigation.

Pentagon Statement on Metro Entrance Shooting
A shooting incident has occurred at the Pentagon Metro Entrance this evening at approximately 6:40 p.m. EST. Two Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA) officers were injured when an unknown suspect fired at them. The suspect was injured in return fire from the PFPA officers. Injuries to the two PFPA officers do not appear to be life threatening. A suspect is in custody and his condition is unknown. All three injured have been taken to a local hospital. All Pentagon entrances were secured for a brief time but have since been reopened with the exception of the Pentagon Metro entrance. The incident is under investigation. More details will be released when available.

However, I would not at all be surprised if Bedell’s ultimate rationale had nothing to do with Jihad at all - I think he attacked the Pentagon for basically the reasons he put out in his manifesto. [Link was in my last post above.]

John Patrick Bedell was a brilliant and seemingly gentle computer whiz, yet so withdrawn that people in this rural community where his parents and grandparents are civic leaders knew little about him _ until he opened fire at the Pentagon this week.
Family and friends now paint a portrait of a troubled man who sank deep into mental illness and anti-government rants, even as his mother _ a nursing instructor _ tried to seek help.
"The family tried over and over to get him into some kind of treatment, but because he was an adult, they were restricted," said Reb Monaco, a family friend for three decades. "Patrick himself was in some sort of denial."
It is still unclear why Bedell opened fire at the Pentagon entrance Thursday _ wounding two police officers before he was fatally shot _ though he had railed on the Internet about his distrust of the government and his distaste for marijuana laws.
"We may never know why he made this terrible decision," his devastated family said in a statement Friday. "One thing is clear though _ his actions were caused by an illness and not a defective character."
Bedell, 36, a graduate student in electrical engineering at San Jose State University, was diagnosed as bipolar, or manic depressive, and had been in and out of treatment programs for years.

I had wondered about that, for the Police Scanner has many cases of bi-polar subjects, some nights it is almost one after the other and I had wondered about the disease.

Good advice and I have been doing so.
This may win the record for the most twisted story of the year, the left say he was a righter and the right call him left.
It is odd that he was so upset about a man being killed for exposing dope importers, when he was a dope user himself.
This is a tragic case of a mentally ill person from a very good family falling through the cracks. A story heard over and over again in these modern times,when parents cannot commit a child, no matter how seriously mentally ill he is.
I know a friend of the family, who lives near them in Hollister; they are grieving for their dead son, and doubly grieving because they tried so hard to keep his life from ending like this.
