Health professionals applaud as President Obama speaks about health care reform at the White House. Blue Dog Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak says he's counted 11 lawmakers plus himself willing to kill President Obama's health care overhaul over abortion language.
Stupak, of Michigan, sponsored a provision in the House of Representative's health care bill that passed last fall that clearly prohibits the use of federal money to pay for abortions. That language did not make it into the Senate bill, the model Obama is using to craft the plan he is expected to send to Congress shortly.
"We're not gonna vote for this bill with that kind of language in there," Stupak said Thursday in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."
"I want to see health care, but we're not gonna bypass some principles and belief that we feel strongly about," he said, adding that he's "prepared to take responsibility" for bringing down the bill.
Obama has urged the Senate to use the "reconciliation" procedure to pass the bill, which would allow Democrats to avoid a 60-vote majority needed to strike down a filibuster but would demand that lawmakers vote only on matters that impact the budget. Before that happens, however, House Democrats can prevent the legislation from reaching the Senate.

I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said that if the government fears the people, that is liberty if the people fear the government, that is tyranny. Since most thinking people now fear the government we have tyranny. God help us.

This is either going to pass in the House by one vote or else it is going to fail by 20 or more. Once it is known that the bill is not going to pass, Dems will abandon it wholesale. But there is every possibility that Pelosi and 0bama will bribe and threaten enough members to get the votes.
Hey Blue Dogs, your pain could be over - just switch to the Republican Party.
I bet Boehner would make some pretty nice deals to encourage them to vote for someone other than Elphaba for Speaker of the House.

They only passed it because it had the Stupeck amendment in it.
Bart Stupak has been my congresscritter for 17 years. I’ve never given him my vote and probably never will, BUT, I do appreciate the stance he has taken and pray that these 12 do not back down! The country needs more statesmen instead of mere politicians.
