Hot off the heels of Texas Governor Rick Perrys decisive victory over Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson for the Lone Star States GOP gubernatorial nomination, Daily Beast columnist Mark McKinnon thinks the governor is well-positioned for a bid at the presidency, or at least the VP slot:
Theres a fight right now for the soul of the Republican Party. Theres a dominant and loud wing led by social ideologues like Sarah Palin, who endorsed Perry. But if she doesnt run for presidentand if shes actually smart, she wont because shell never wield as much power, influence, or money than she does now, and shes unlikely to win a general electionthen the field opens up considerably. And whos left to fill that right- wing spectrum? Mike Huckabee has a prison commutation problem. Rick Santorum has a narrow Christian base of support and as a former senator spent a lot of time inside the unpopular Beltway. And if a more moderate candidate like Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, or Mitch Daniels (watch out for Mitch the Knife) wins the nomination, theyll be looking for someone to put in the No. 2 slot with appeal to Southerners and strong conservatives.
Perry currently denies having any interest in the White House, but given the nature of politics, that doesnt mean much. And McKinnon is right that theres no clear-cut conservative favorite among the current field of presumed 2012 contenders, giving Perry a potential opening if he wants it. But should conservatives want Perry?

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find only things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelogus
The Amnesty Princess, Charlie Crist in cowboy boots will be running for Prez, polluting the nations discourse with his lies along with the other RINOs. Just peachy.
Not this Texan in the White House.
I’ll take him in Austin over Bill White but that is not saying much.
Egads, no! Perry is only a Republican at election time. Sure, I voted for him for governor but it’s not like there was much choice.
Gag
This guy has no chance at POTUS.
I am a Texan and I can tell you that Rick Perry is more like Romney than Reagan.
He is NOT the man for the job.
I agree. DC is not the place for Gov Goodhair.
Hell, I still wonder if Texas is. He runs hot and cold on conservatism. At times I really wonder if he still isn’t a Dem in Pubbie clothes.
Ditto that
We do not need a Liberal Globalist, land-seizing/pro-Communist Chinese TTC goon, and an open borders sedition advocate like Rick Perry in the White House.
I do not know which is scarier: The liberal media pushing liberal democrats....or faux-con media claiming people like Rick Perry are “conservative”
I wish we had the last Texas in the White House back again.
However, should Perry ever run, I will actively work against him.
No, no, no, no, no.
That said, Perry is an opportunist. If there’s an opportunity for him to run, he will. As previously stated, he’s only conservative at election time, or when a Tea Party is-a-happenin’.
DITTO
I will vote for any republican who stands a chance of beating obama. We are going to need a fighter to reverse obamacare through reconciliation — first order of business.
Both have actual experience at running/managing state governments. No more legislators. Legislators know nothing except how to pass more and more laws/regulations.
I am a conservative Texan. Rick Perry is not.
He just happens to be the lesser of two evils right now. Texans would not be too excited about him attempting to run for president. He is a pro-amnesty moderate who happens to talk tough during election runs. He is also very arrogant.
Please squelch the talk.
Egads is right. Governor of Texas is one thing but President or even VP? Somebody’s been into the (hot) sauce again.
Mr. Horowitz, or Mr. Freiburger, or whoever wrote the article:
It's Hutchison. Not Hutchinson, but Hutchison.
You don't have to be a fan -- I'm not -- but at least learn to spell her name.
We have not had a Texan in the White House in 41 years.
