Argentina was celebrating a diplomatic coup yesterday in its attempt to force Britain to accept talks on the future of the Falkland Islands, after a two-hour meeting in Buenos Aires between Hillary Clinton and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
Responding to a request from Mrs Kirchner for friendly mediation between Britain and Argentina, Mrs Clinton, the US Secretary of State, said she agreed that talks were a sensible way forward and offered to encourage both countries to sit down.
Her intervention defied Britains longstanding position that there should be no negotiations unless the islands 3,000 inhabitants asked for them. It was hailed in Buenos Aires as a major diplomatic victory, but condemned in the Falklands.
Britain insisted there was no need for mediation as long as the islanders wanted to remain British. We dont think thats necessary, a Downing Street spokesman said.
What began as a last-minute change to Mrs Clintons itinerary on her five-day sweep through Latin America has snowballed into a major diplomatic incident that has emboldened Argentina and caught the US largely un- awares. It could force Britain to reassess the level of international support for its efforts to develop a hydrocarbon industry in the Falklands basin.

Throwing Britain under the bus once more.
Clinton never liked democracy.
The administration continues to screw our friends and to be tone deaf on the subtleties of international relations.
mrs. clinton is the least meaningful SOS in modern history — they should just remove the pretense and send ayers and soros.
Like the billboards with W on them say to our allies: “Miss me?”
The photo makes me vomit.
“Talks”? Talks about what?
Handing them over? A piece of the oil action?
I gather the Argies are not in a position militarily to force anything, other than not allow any supply ship to operate out of Argentine waters.
The Brits are our greatest allies in ANPAK. They won’t tolerate much more of this crap.
Was she shot at there?
The Brits need to tell Hillary to take a hike and mind her own business. What an ass.
Screw Great Brittan, screw self determination, screw American consistency and reliability. If Obama thinks its going to hurt America he’s all for it.
The Brits should just pull their troops out of Afghanistan right now. They should also bring their Ambassador to DC home for “consultations”.
This could be construed as a very HOSTILE act. They should act as if Obama had declared war. Maybe such a reaction would actually make an impression.
What is their to negotiate??? Nothing.
There was no mention of Falklands natural resources in the London Times piece. That’s interesting.
Chavez supports the Argies, ergo, so does Team Obama.
How’s that hoax and chains con man that you were so excited about working out for you Brits??
... looks like just about as well as it’s working out for us on this side of the pond.
I guess they didn’t do it right the first time. This time they better sink every argentine boat and shoot down every argentine airplane. Then firebomb every port and every airport. This is just plain stupid to let them get away with anything.
There may be a bit of a precedent in the way Grover Cleveland intervened in the dispute between Venezuela and Great Britain (over the border between Venezuela and British Guiana) but that wasn't really very similar.
Maybe the rationale is the same as for Bill Clinton's pardoning of the Puerto Rican terrorists--to win Hispanic votes in the next election.
Let’s see... They were going to “repair” relations with our allies that Bush had destroyed.
This will definitely do the trick with Britain.
Hillary is making Albright look like Madison or Monroe.
What? Does Hildebeast wanta bed the Argentine b!tch?
Huma will have a hissy fit.
