Ronald Reagan used to be a Democrat, too - and compared to what’s in the White House now, do you really think Perry wouldn’t be an improvement?

As to Perry's liberal past, the analogy to Reagan falls flat on its face when you consider the fact that Perry at war with the right wing of his own party only 2 years ago over immigration, the Gardasil vaccine, a tax hike he signed, and an abortionist judge he appointed to the State Supreme Court. He simply figured out that if he didn't run to the right his electoral future was toast. And sadly, most of our voters were dumb enough to believe it.
So sure, there are a hell of a lot worse things that could be governor than Rick Perry. But that doesn't make him a good guy, and I still wouldn't trust the guy as far as I can spit.
Rick Perry is a very talented politician. Doesn’t mean we want him as a prez nominee.

Fair enough. But Perry is also an especially untrustworthy one. His history of flopping in the political wind puts him very close to that exclusive category of flip-floppers reserved for the likes of John Kerry and Bill Clinton...or at least the closest things Republicans have to either of those two in terms of personal sleaziness and political opportunism.
Bingo.
I voted for Perry today, but I'll pass on that particular buffet dish, if you don't mind. I prefer not to get mental indigestion.
Ask most Texans, and they'll tell you that Perry was (again) simply the best choice out of what was offered. He's not the conservative that some at FR think he is.

At my polling place in Collin County, Republicans out-voted Democrats about 12 to 1. The Republican line went out the door, and around the building, but the Democrat table was quiet as a ghost town.
It was the same all over town today.
The Dems just aren't fired up like we are.

Good. She had no business trying to knock off a relatively popular Republican governor. It was pure ambition on her part.
Yep, I know him personally. Someone close to me worked for him. He is a scumbag. Sadly, I bet he wins by hook or CROOK. He is “connected”. He will do ANYTHING to win. Frankly, he scares me....
If you want my honest take on how Debra Medina won (or is currently winning about) 18% of the vote - in spite of the Glenn Beck fiasco and with essentially zero money - in a race against two well-funded incumbents... I can sum it up for you in two words.
Nullification and Interposition. As one of the primary planks in her campaign platform Debra Medina committed herself to pursuing what is very likely the only viable, peaceful remedy left to accomplish what most of us ultimately desire; the restoration of Constitutional governance and the deconstruction of the 100 year-old welfare/regulatory state.
If Perry wants to woo the Medina supporters in the general election here’s what I suggest he does. (Note, I’m simplifying the process here a little bit for effect... but y’all get the idea.)
First, call the state legislature into a special session and urge them to issue an ordinance of nullification against something (it doesn’t really matter what, but I would suggest something not terribly popular down here like EPA... whose mere existence constitutes an unconstitutional usurpation of Texas’ sovereignty by the federal government).
Second, once the state legislature declares all of the federal mandates imposed by the EPA to be null and void in the state of Texas... the Governor should then publicly call upon all the energy producers in Texas to begin producing as much energy as they wish, as long as their activities do not run afoul of any Texas laws.
Third, the Governor should issue explicit directives to all state officials and city and county executives throughout the state that they are not bound (as the Supreme Court - in one of its few flights of recent sanity - amazingly affirmed in the case Printz v. United States), regardless of what some federal official might say to the contrary, to enforce federal law, and that they (city, county, and state officials) shall in no way contribute to the enforcement of the nullified federal mandates.
and Last, the Governor should publicly affirm to the energy producers (itching to take advantage of their newly restored freedoms) that all executive powers of the state of Texas will be deployed to interpose between any federal officials attempting to enforce their unconstitutional mandates and the people of Texas.
Of course, the Governor will never do this, as he has no real interest in bringing down the statist status quo... because he’s a part of it.
Kinda knew he would! She overplayed her hand...and it wasn’t much of one anyway. She needs to stick to what she is doing...trying to represent us in the Senate....and helping to defeat this administration’s crazy and dangerous agenda!
Despite the protests of a few select FReepers, Perry is a REAL conservative, a STRONG conservative, and one that will win a third term as governor of Texas. He has done a great job there, and will continue to do so. Challenging the EPA emissions restrictions was a brilliant political move for him in the primary.....not that he really needed it in the final analysis.....Hutchison provided no real challenge.
Hopefully Kay Hutchison will resign and a REAL conservative like Michael Williams can take her seat.
