Harlem Democrat Charles Rangel now says he will step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, NBC News has learned.
He may make the move as early as tonight and Michigan Democratic Rep Sander Levin will temporarily take over the committee.
Some details still need to be ironed out, but sources said Rangel has been pushed to step down before the House voted on a bill to forcefully strip him of the coveted chairmanship.
Rangel has been under fire ever since an ethics committee released a report Thursday that found that he violated House rules by accepting two corporate-sponsored trips to the Caribbean.
Rangel countered Friday that the ethics report "exonerates" him because it says there is no evidence that he knew the trips were sponsored by corporations. The report said his staff knew who paid for the trips. Following the report, even Democrats began asking Rangel to step down.
The citizens of his home state sent him here, that's their decision," said Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Mississippi), who lead the charge in asking Rangel to relinquish his post. "But members of the [Democratic Caucus] made him chairman of that committee, and he should step down until all this is resolved.
Too bad that photo’s not from a documentary called “Weekend at Charlie’s”...............
Poor Charley. The jig is up! Time to pay the piper for all those indiscretions. Maybe if you cough up a few more corrupt politicians, we’ll go light on you ...or maybe we won’t. Serves you right for abusing your position as a representative of the citizens of your district. What makes you a$$holes think you have some kind of special priviledges or exemptions from the law? You are a pitiful man, and maybe oughta to consider how you will redeem your soul before its too late.
You need to be very, very careful when you call a black man BOY!!
Darn, when I first read the headline I thought he was stepping down from the House not just his chair.
Still good news though.
THE ENTIRE DEMOCRAT PARTY IS CORRUPT - YOUR PIC IS A PROFOUND WAKE UP CALL TO THE ELECTORATE.
THIS SOB NEEDS TO BE DRIVEN OUT OF OFFICE IN DISGRACE (IF HE KNOWS THE MEANING OF THE WORD)
Good riddance
Say good night Charlie, you Rat bastard, you’re done!
Rangel is staying on. Pelosi refuses to comment.
Looks like a deal made to ram HC thru then resign.I have a feeling much more coming out soon on Rangel’s corruption.
He is a crook who has been in Congress since the flood, and for years has been under the impression that the rules and laws don’t apply to him. He has made a mockery of democracy and of Democrats. He is an unscrupulous jerk. The Democrats let him slide on very serious tax charges that would have landed the rest of us in prison. He deserves to be prosecuted.
They caught him ridin’ dirty. (shouted in a reverend wright voice)
Charlie Rangel hasnt agreed to give up his gavel

It’s all so confusing. I’m sure over night we will hear 15 different stories from Rangel’s staff.
His choice im an easy going
Rep. John Carter (R-TX) will introduce a special resolution Weds that could potentially relieve Rep. Charlie Rangel http://bit.ly/cCfBlh
Its a cage match between Pelosi and Rangel with the CBC, the Blue Dogs, and the Republicans all involved in the palace intrigue.
I’m doubling down on my bet that Rangel stays and San Fran Nan is forced to give up the Speaker’s gavel.
John Lewis (D-GA) of the Congressional Black Caucus would become the new Speaker of the House. All 178 Republicans would vote for this along with all 43 members of the CBC for 221 votes.
A futher irony would be if the CBC were the ones to kill Obamacare and lead the pivot towards jobs and economy.
Notice how QUIET the Congressional Black Caucus has been?
Don’t be surprised if a vote on the floor of the House comes up on striping Rangel of his Ways and Means gavel and all 178 Republicans vote to ABSTAIN.
Politics ALWAYS makes stange bedfellows.
Thanks for the update.
