Boehner backs Bunning's efforts (Whoa!)

While Senate Republicans have started to bail on Sen. Jim Bunning and his one-man Senate filibuster, House Minority Leader John Boehner is backing the Kentucky Republican’s efforts to stall an unemployment benefits, COBRA and highway funding bill.

“I think Sen. Bunning has a legitimate argument he’s making. The Democrats just passed this pay-go legislation, and not even a week after the president signed it into law, they want to exempt the first bill that comes to the Senate floor,” Boehner said in a press conference Tuesday.

Earlier Tuesday, Sen. Susan Collins criticized the Bunning for holding up federal unemployment benefits, telling POLITICO that “Sen. Bunning’s views do not represent the majority of the Republican caucus.” Sen. Jim Inhofe said he was concerned about the political backlash that might stem from Bunning’s stand, which resulted in the furlough of thousands of Department of Transportation employees this week.

“He has the right as a senator to express his will,” Boehner said.

Exactly! Boehner needs to go to every camera available and make this exact point.

"While Senate Republicans have started to bail on Sen. Jim Bunning and his one-man Senate filibuster...,"

He not filibustering - not even close. He just refuses to sign on to a unanimous consent decree. If the dems wanted to take this issue to floor and pass it there is nothing any Republican could do to stop it.

Remember, he isn’t stopping them from holding from a vote. The Democrats are just trying to milk this for what its worth. They know the media is their poodle.

Losing Sen. Susan Collins’s support isn’t exactly “Republicans bailing” out.

Bunning is FOR extending the benefits bill. He just wants it paid for with money that’s already been made available, and not tacked onto the already enormous national debt. 14 TRILLION at the moment!

Unemployment benefits used to be temporary, not lasting one to two years. Most getting UC don’t make a concerted job search until the last four weeks of benefits. If we let people loaf unstead of get jobs, our economy will not recover and our tax burden will increase. You say there are no jobs? Well, citizens should do any legal job at any wage, minimum or above, and not expect others to carry them.

...bears repeating:

Obama signs ‘pay as you go’ legislation into law  "...the president praised so-called "pay as you go" legislation that he has just signed into law and that prevents Congress from approving new spending unless it is offset by budgetary cuts elsewhere."
