Republican consultant Charley Manning is replacing the nationally syndicated Rush Limbaugh on WRKO radio starting Monday.
Jason Wolfe, program director for WRKO-AM (680), confirmed to the Herald that Manning will take over the stations weekday noon to 3 p.m. slot.
Manning, who has served as a campaign adviser to former Gov. Mitt Romney, emphasized that his new show, The Charley Manning Show, will be local.
The GOP strategist said his show will touch on all of the local issues that everybody is talking about, but with a special look at politics.
Im looking forward to really getting into politics, especially because this is going to be such a great year with the three-way race for governor, a big race for attorney general and state treasurer, Manning said.
Limbaugh has been heard on WRKOs airwaves for more than 15 years, but Clear Channel has been in talks to swipe him for its new local conservative talk station, WXKS-AM (1200), which debuts in April. Limbaugh is syndicated through Clear Channels subsidiary, Premiere Radio Networks.
Manning is no stranger to WRKO. Hes filled-in on the air and co-hosted The Spin Doctors from 1995 to 1997.
Hes a veteran of this market. Hes a superior political analyst, Wolfe said. In a year thats going to have such intensity around the election cycle, hes going to bring an unbelievable amount of credibility and insight.
“Rush Radio” is being pushed in a few markets. It’s not just Boston. My guess is Rush Radio means Rush + other Clear Channel personalities all in one package to fill in all or most of your airtime. Available to independent radio stations and Clear Channel owned radio stations
Package deal is the key!
I see. It makes no difference to me which show they had on, but from a business perspective it seemed they were trading a high demand show for a much lower demand, but if they're loosing the high demand anyway then it does make sense.
I see, thanks for the clarification. At first blush it didn't make sense to adopt a show that has a lower demand over the higher one unless the cost was just so much less, but if they were losing anyway then it makes sense.
“That sounds like a poor business decision”
I believe it is more of a romney for president decision and romney can well afford it.
As the Rush contracts come due, Clear Channel(which owns 1,200 stations), nationwide, has moved him from the competing station(s) onto their own frequencies.
Will be interesting to see what this does to Howie’s ratings.
His show does spin off of Rush’s afternoon, topic-wise, a great deal if nothing is going on locally/regionally.
He knows what people have been listening to for the past 3 hours, he’s listening too - show prep.
Hopefully Howie can skedaddle out of WRKO ASAP
When Howie Carr was replaced by the anti-Palin, proRomney
Colonel, WRKO’s ratings went into the deep, deep toliet.
Tens of thousands elected to turn the gravel-voiced
sadly whacked out past-Obama-voter/now-Romney-voter
off and go to a clearer, more intelligent stream.
WRKO was very lucky to have had Howie
Carr come back to their rescue.
Sounds like WRKO learned nothing, and thought it
could hurt Howie Carr, too, by killing his ‘lead in’.
WRKO will soon achieve its wish to be WDOA.
Now that's a bet that I'm not buying...if Romney is the republican choice for presidential candidate it would be tantamount to the republican party selecting Obama as it's candidate as I won't be voting for Romney...and I suspect I'm not alone in that view. If the republicans select Romney as their candidate then they shouldn't be shocked if the Tea Party becomes an actual party...and they'd have my vote.
Oh boy, I can’t......wa.......t........snore.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I think so too.....
I remember when Rush was dumped by a radio station here in Detroit that changed to sports talk format. A number of people here were saying that that was the end of the road for him.......LOL!
Not long after he was picked up by WJR, the biggest AM station in S.E. Michigan........and he's still going strong.
On a previous thread a few months back, a NC station had to give up Rush because Clear Channel was putting him exclusively on Clear Channel-owned stations. Not a scandal, just a business decision.
Howie Carr is an indentured servant to WRKO for the length of his contract = 5 years (I believe about a year or year and ha half of that has passed already). Howie was all set to flee from WRKO after WRKO became FELON radio; hiring convicted felons like Felon Fineran the former speaker of the House who was convicted of lying under oath to serve as a TALK SHOW HOST! Pontificating and moralizing on the political and moral issues of the day! It is like Al Capone being hired to speak on honest business practices and paying your taxes. Fieran is a sleaze bag of the first order. Anyway, that was the last straw for Howie (hates Fineran because he knows EXACTLY who and what kind of "man" he is. Howie had a very lucrative offer from another radio station (FM with much better reception), he was already to leave WRKO in the dust BUT there was this little clause in his contract that said that WRKO could choose to match the offer and that they had the right to do this and if they did Howie HAD TO STAY. WRKO matched it, Howie went to court to try and get out of it, the court said "no dice" so Howie was literally forced to stay at WRKO for 5 years until his current contract is up! He positively hates being there, WRKO for their part has made life miserable for him; gutted his staff, etc... So he is STUCK as a slave (albeit with a decent salary) at WRKO.
For WRKO to cancel RUSH is a stupid thing to do, RUSH and Howie are the only reason multitudes of people here in New England even listen to WRKO any more. NO one can take Howies place, once he is gone. As for Ovie Nelson, he is a quasi liberal and very wishy washy, moral relativism. Last week Colonel Hunt was on Howies show while he was on vacation. Colonel Hunt was an unmitigated disaster = he has turned into a liberal Obamessiah apologist and makes all kinds of excuses for him; he actually voted for Obama and it shows! Too bad, he used to be one of the good guys, now he has joined the likes of O'Reily :op
So, once RUSH and Howie Carr are no longer on WRKO, their stations ratings will go right into the toilet. I have some sage advice for anyone owning stock in WRKO = "SELL, SELL, SELL!"
I know the history too, but I wonder if there is a release clause in the contract the station will need to utilize. If Howie's ratings sink below a certain advertising threshold because the anchor program is gone (lazy listeners forgetting to change the channel back to RKO), will RKO even be able to afford his salary?
Heehee, I’m dancing in the streets!
WRKO did not cancel Rush’s show. They lost it to another station
“No offense to the others, but everyone knows who the Boss is. Other AM radio shows exist to fill the time Rush isn’t on. “
___________-
Rush was the Alexander Graham Bell of talk radio butm now he has become a rotary phone. Rush may come to an end but it eill be a result of good old fashioned competiton and nothing the left can come up with.
There are lots of time I listen to Rush and feel he is tryin to “out outrageous” Beck but can’t quite keep up. If Glen ever decided to switch to noon Rush would be in trouble. If Beck ever decided to compete with Hannity, Hannity would be back in construction.
Same thing happened to a station here when ClearChannel consolidated and made an FM talker here in the Twin Cities. 5 years later that old local talk station cried uncle and changed over to Sports Talk format.
It’s usually not the old stations decision. Usually it’s a Clear channel deal
Is this the Mack Daddy?
I agree with you on Hannity. But Rush is still the king. I was listening to Hannity last night. He was kissing up to an obama voter and telling her how he wanted obama to succeed. I changed stations then. So long as there is country music on the radio, I will not listen to Hannity. If country music goes off, well, there is an off/on switch...
