Republican consultant Charley Manning is replacing the nationally syndicated Rush Limbaugh on WRKO radio starting Monday.
Jason Wolfe, program director for WRKO-AM (680), confirmed to the Herald that Manning will take over the stations weekday noon to 3 p.m. slot.
Manning, who has served as a campaign adviser to former Gov. Mitt Romney, emphasized that his new show, The Charley Manning Show, will be local.
The GOP strategist said his show will touch on all of the local issues that everybody is talking about, but with a special look at politics.
Im looking forward to really getting into politics, especially because this is going to be such a great year with the three-way race for governor, a big race for attorney general and state treasurer, Manning said.
Limbaugh has been heard on WRKOs airwaves for more than 15 years, but Clear Channel has been in talks to swipe him for its new local conservative talk station, WXKS-AM (1200), which debuts in April. Limbaugh is syndicated through Clear Channels subsidiary, Premiere Radio Networks.
Manning is no stranger to WRKO. Hes filled-in on the air and co-hosted The Spin Doctors from 1995 to 1997.
Hes a veteran of this market. Hes a superior political analyst, Wolfe said. In a year thats going to have such intensity around the election cycle, hes going to bring an unbelievable amount of credibility and insight.
For those who haven’t heard, Clear Channel owns WKOX AM 1200,
WXKS AM 1430, WXKS-FM 107.9 and WJMN-FM 94.5 in Boston. For now AM 1200 is Spanish (but with Coast to Coast overnight) but on April 1st—perhaps earlier—they will switch to a conservative talk station, most likely with the call letters of WXKS.
The lineup is scheduled to be a local morning show 6-9 am,
then Glenn Beck 9-noon, Rush 12-3, Sean Hannity 3-6 pm,
Jason Lewis 6-9 pm, TBA 9-mid., and the Coast to Coast. The
nationally syndicated shows are all distributed by Clear
Channel’s Premiere division.
Matt Siegel, host of Matty in the Morning on WXKS-FM,
said on his show yesterday that “we have an AM station
that’s going talk in about a month” and they even plan to
have Rush call in to Kiss 108 to promote it. “I don’t like his politics but I like him.”
No word yet if Rush will actually premiere Mon. on AM 1200
(the sched. launch is to be April 1) or not...if by chance he’s off WRKO but not on the new AM 1200 yet he can be picked up on
WXTK 95.1 Cape Cod
WGIR 610 Manchester NH
WHJJ 920 Prov RI
WTAG 580 Worcester
Well, this is not the choice of Entercom which owns WRKO.
Clear Channel wants an all talk station on their AM 1200 and they want it stocked with their own shows from their Premiere
divisions.
Beck and Hannity are currently not on in Boston. They will be on the new station...and they already are running Coast to
Coast on AM 1200.
Entercom would have loved to keep Rush but not their decision I guess. The new station will be known as Rush Radio 1200
and the rushradio1200.com domain name is already registered
(was pointing to yahoo the other day)
No offense to the others, but everyone knows who the Boss is. Other AM radio shows exist to fill the time Rush isn't on.
Howie Carr list ping. No more Rush lead in to Howie starting Monday. In fact tomorrow will be the last day you actually will have Howie following Rush as Wed-Fri will be Avi Nelson
filling in for Howie.
Supposedly Rush is to debut on AM 1200 on Apr 1 but it could be earlier. See above for other stations carrying el Rushbo.
Entercom happens...to be losing out because Clear Channel/
Premiere wants Beck, Rush, Hannity, etc to be on their
own station.
Jason Wolke is an idiot. He fired Pete Shepperd "The Everyman Sports Goof" last month.
Ordway sucks big time and stays with a million dollar contract on WEEI.
Soon Mikey Adams will back selling Fords or tending bar at the Halfway Cafe.
I remember how Rush would be on weekends on WHDH AM 850 in Boston. Then he went daily, with Howie on after him. Both Rush and Howie moved to WRKO in ‘94 when the then-owners of
WRKO (Atlantic Ventures?) bought 850 and made that into
sports radio WEEI.
Wonder if the big Red Sox contract is dragging WEEI/WRKO down?
Maybe Sheppard could wind up on CBS’ WBZ-FM 98.5 the Sports hub (studios are very close to the “sneaker building” where
WRKO/WEEI is!)
Wolfe got a lot of the credit for WEEI’s success but WRKO
hasn’t been much lately...Howie calls it “zombie radio”
Nah, best decision they can make if the details above are correct. If Clear Channel is dead set on moving Rush’s program to their own station then it at least gives this station a few weeks to try and break in a new program before Rush dominates the timeslot later. Still they are screwed. Making the best of a bad situation. The new guy won’t touch Rush’s ratings when people find him.
Get a grip, Rock, it's not that bad........
Matt Siegel of Kiss 108 Boston (FM sister station to the new RushRadio1200) mentions how Rush is coming to AM 1200...

On WEEI, D and C are great in the mornings. The vanilla milkshake twins, Dale and Holly are boring. The Ordway “Big Show” yell fest stinks. Planet Mikey is is funny and entertaining most of the time. They go the FSN feed at midnight and we get “JT the Shill”.
Not anymore; they now run ESPN overnights and on weekends.
Sports Hub 98.5 runs Fox Sports shows like Tony Bruno and
JT the Brick late nights.
WEEI picked up ESPN affiliation in part for such things as
baseball playoffs, etc. When WEEI dropped Fox Sports, WBZ-FM
98.5 picked it up
Charlie Manning is a nice guy and I wish him well.......I think he used to cover wrestling for the Herald but listening to him is as exciting as watching paint dry.
