Massive Search Underway for Missing California Honor Student

Scores of volunteers searched a California lake on Sunday for signs of a missing teenager in what San Diego authorities called an unprecendeted response to a missing persons case.

Chelsea King, [Pic in URL] a 17-year-old honor student at Poway High School in Poway, Calif., about 25 miles north of San Diego, disappeared Thursday while on an after-school run through Rancho Bernardo Community Park, Fox5SanDiego.com reported.

Authorities said Chelsea, a senior and long-distance runner, was last seen at 2 p.m. Thursday before setting out on a routine several-mile jog along an extensive trail system around Lake Hodges.

Police found the teenager's black BMW sedan parked inside the park's parking lot with her cell phone inside, the station reported.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, along with the FBI and law enforcement from Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties, launched on all-out search for Chelsea using helicopters, infrared devices and search dogs to scour the park's rugged terain.

Perhaps this is out of line, but schools need to STOP empowering girls to believe that they’re invincible and can live fearlessly. Too many females place themselves in danger because of it. Women leaving bars alone at 2am, Natalie Holloway, Chandra Levy, etc.

Our granddaughter is a runner and when we took her with us on vacation, I came up with the idea of having her carry the walky-talky with orders to beep if Anything even seemed a bit off and gramps would be there in very few minutes.
Off-road I doubt if anything on two feet would be much of a threat.

I used to live on a hilltop above Lake Hodges. It was not uncommon to see mountain lions. I came across one once when I was mountain biking on a narrow path that runs along the lake by the dam.

There are also a lot of narrow running trails along the gorge of the lake that have loose rocks and it would take a long time for anyone to find you if you slipped and fell over the edge.

I also remenber coming across small camps of illegal aliens, but I know the Border Patrol would often make sweeps of the are. This was 10 years ago though...

I pray she is OK.

I heard on a report earlier today that there had been a recent attempted abduction in that area.

Prayers for her safety.

She would not comment on radio traffic reports that a shoe and a pedometer had been found in the area. She said the search would continue through a predicted rainstorm.

Chelsea’s cross-country coach, Dan Schaitel, said the team would often run the trails at the park for practice, usually along the north side of the lake.

“It’s a beautiful run. The children are well-versed, especially the girls, to never go on a run by themselves,” Schaitel said.

I’m thinking mountain lion as well, but that doesn’t diminish the simplemindedness of ANYONE (let alone females) going jogging in wilderness without some line of defense (pepper spray, knife, taser).

It’s a sick world if you can’t take a run in a public park without fearing for your life. I don’t know the town or the area, but do I suspect that it’s got problems with gangs, slums, or illegal aliens?

The problem isn’t running in broad daylight outside. The problem is human predators—too many of them, and it seems like more all the time.

There is certain time of the month I do not go into the wilderness alone - there’s about a couple hundred square miles of it behind where the family lives ... if you know what I mean ....
