I’m seeing various places report a population of 6,414.

I recall having seen a documentary somewhere (Nova,National Geographic,Discovery Channel, etc) saying that the Chilean coast is so tenuous...geologically speaking....that it wasn't a matter of *if* a cataclysmic earthquake/tsunami would occur there but *when*.

Back in my day there was a remote island off Chile's coast to the south that had an indig tribe of serious black magic Indian worshiping traditions and were rather primitive.

I served as an LDS missionary in Constitucion, the town just north of Pellehue. This hurts to see the devastation for these people. My heart is full for them.

Was there any chance to evacuate, or did these poor people get caught by surprise. IOW are we looking a property damage, that can be repaired, or thousands of dead, that can never be made right.

A firehouse stands intact on the coast close to the epicenter of an earthquake that generated waves flooding many towns to the north and south, in Pelluhue February 28, 2010.
