(CNN) -- The University of California San Diego has suspended a student who admitted to hanging a noose in a campus library, school officials announced Friday.
"We are feeling real pain, and we will take real action," said UCSD chancellor Marye Anne Fox told reporters. "The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is my primary concern."

According to research by Tuskegee University, between 1992 and 1965 a total of 3,445 blacks were lynched (along with 1297 whites).
The Crips kill more blacks EVERY YEAR than lynching ever did.
I doubt significant numbers of blacks were hanged BECAUSE they were black, as distinct from being hanged because they were seen as a threat to the general peace and security.

Flatheads was a derogatory term towards the Choctaw tribe that practiced flattening of the head.
Yokel was a derogatory term used to describe farmers of the south and midwest.

Up until around 1900 lynching were, unfortunately, all too common, mostly in the South, but not unheard of in other areas. The overwhelming number of lynchings, about 70%, involved black defendants often accused of murder or rape against a white. I suppose in most cases the victim of the lynching was guilty, but the very prospect of lynching can be terrifying. In at least one case a white woman had been raped and identified her assailant as a black man. In retaliation a mob hanged several black men who had no plausible connection to the crime.
Still, it was a hundred years ago and in American popular culture the noose is more closely associated with the Old West than lynch mobs.

That’s where my horse-thieving ancestors were from, Oklahoma. None of them got hung to my knowledge, but a noose was still mighty threatening to them.
Here's the only report I've seen (found via google I hasten to add) that dares to offer the motive given by the perpetrator:
A female student turned herself in, claiming that she and two others hung the noose as a piece of ironic "performance art."
(It's self-evident the university knows what's going on here -- the suppressing of this "motive" is more pointlessly PC than the suppressing of what everybody here knows.) Well there we are, a little "irony", a little "performance art", statement -- whatever the statement was supposed to be -- is made. Problem solved? As the comedians say, "wait for it...!":
