Whoa!!!!
A 3-meter tsunami wave hit on Saturday the Robinson Crusoe island, the largest in the Chilean Juan Fernandez archipelago, following a powerful earthquake which struck Chile earlier in the day, the country’s president, Michelle Bachelet, said.
“A village on the island is half-flooded, people have been evacuated to higher elevations,” the president said, adding there had been extreme damage from the tsunami.
We were just trying to clear up measurements.
There’s a big difference between 20 feet and 20 meters.
However, as someone pointed out on another thread, there is a full moon tonight, which would make for a high tide.
No doubt there are other factors influencing tsunami development than just earthquake magnitude.
They simply can’t take the chance with that potential for loss of life. If they didn’t and people died, they’d be slammed for that.
What do you want them to do? Which would you rather they did? Be too cautious, or not cautious enough? What’s it going to hurt anyone to get out of potential harms way for a few hours?
They’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

precautions fine, fear not. Hawaii had plenty of time to prepare and evacuate. News should be FACT driven, CNN and their ‘experts’ are way off base and that is wrong.
Right away people ran with 120 ft Tsunami in San Juan Islands, now we see it was 9 ft. Massive damage for sure, but 120 ft would have wiped the island clean of every living thing.
I think Hilo webcam will be better. In 1960 after Chile 9.5 Hilo got hit the worst.

CNN just showed a town that was hit with a 7.7 FOOT wave in Chile. Not meters.
The damage will be great where the water hits.
Water is virtually incompressible so getting hit by a wave of any significant size would be like getting hit by a wall.
Water is easy enough to dive into, but belly flops hurt like the dickens.
It's all how you approach the water, or it approaches you.
Just the title of this thread seems sensational- and part of the problem is hearing whether something is 6, 16 or 60...and whether it’s feet or meters.
Meanwhile- nothing has come ashore in Panama?
I would base my actions on NOAA before anything I heard from cnn.
I’ve seen plenty how they exaggerate, not arguing with you there.
While such monster waves are possible, it is more likely the newscasters are ignorant or exaggerating to attract viewers.
It will probably be blamed for flooding of the vault holding the REAL Obama Birth Certificate (long form original), and he will skate free.....
meters are socialist
Whatever they are- I refuse to deal with them- that’s why God made charts :)
When CNN first started talking about it, they said it was expected to be NOTHING ! So the sirens are just for a ‘drill’.....but makes hyped up ‘news’, eh????
Thanks someone had to say that to make it fair and balanced. (sarc)

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I’m getting telephone calls from readers who have views of the Bay of Panama from Panama City along Balboa Avenue. They report that the sea is as flat as glass, it’s low tide, and there’s nothing to report. Good.

I did that. Except I cut and pasted to my post from their website. What did I do wrong??? I dunno.
Very true.
