WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives reauthorized the Patriot Act for one year Thursday.

The vote was 315-97 .

Many liberals in the House opposed the controversial act, saying it tramps Constitutional protections and civil liberties.

*snip*

The Senate ok'd the package earlier this week. President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law.

“I heard you, but the point stands. Paranoia abounds. As do, apparently, delusions of grandeur. The Obama Administration is no more tracking you than Dick Cheney was tracking DUers.”

It’s not about me or you personally, it’s about the increase in data tracked on everyone.

“This is a criminal justice and counterterrorist law that has helped us avert terrorist activity and out several terrorist cells on American soil. Had it been in place, and competently used, it could’ve averted 9/11.”

It was sold as a counterterrorism law, not expanded general police powers.

“We are at war. We cannot hamstring our those sworn to defend this nation, and expect to win ... and our very freedom and sovereignty depends on victory.”

Yes, we are at war, but it’s one the government has no interest in winning. The greatest threat to our liberty is and always has been the tyrant next door, not the enemy far away.

“Victory over islamic fascism is essential to the preservation of the Republic.”

Our government doesn’t see Islam as a threat and the Republic is long dead.

You win a war by KILLING THE ENEMY, not by watching your own citizens.

Russ Feingold (D, WI) is against The Patriot Act. So, without even having to think about it, I must be for it!

(We’re working on ousting Feingold in the mid-term election.)

“Many liberals in the House opposed the controversial act, saying it tramps Constitutional protections and civil liberties.”

Laughable, since they’re the 1s wanting to take choices away for everything (i.e., doctors, wearing helmets, etc) EXCEPT whether to kill an innocent person.

Otherwise: BWAAAHHHAAAHAAAHAAA.

So, liberals so hate the horrible Bush Patriot Act, eh? Overwhelming majority voted for it, eh?

Is there any place that prints the whole Patriot Act (especially as now enacted)?

Otherwise, I want to know specifics of just how this threatens all of us at any given time. What in the law specifically is “unconstitutional”? Not, “they’re looking at us!!!” but, what are procedures, protocol, etc.

“Is there any place that prints the whole Patriot Act (especially as now enacted)?”

Federal Register.

“Otherwise, I want to know specifics of just how this threatens all of us at any given time. What in the law specifically is “unconstitutional”? Not, “they’re looking at us!!!” but, what are procedures, protocol, etc.”

Well, if you are of a mind that “if you’ve done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear”, you’re fine. These are the same powers Reno sought - roving wire taps, sneak-n-peek searches, access to all business records based on only an NSL. If this was only applied to terrorism, fine. It’s not. It has expanded additional reporting involving everyone. How is that EVER good?

On line?

Again, I don’t think you’re telling the whole story. Wire taps - willy-nilly, without any protocol? Or is there a condition to be fulfilled?

What is an NSL?

“On line?”

Yes, the Federal Register is online.

“Again, I don’t think you’re telling the whole story. Wire taps - willy-nilly, without any protocol? Or is there a condition to be fulfilled?”

“What is an NSL?”

National Security Letter. It is supposed to be followed up with by a warrant, but often isn’t.

Obama signs one year extension of Patriot Act. I’m going to sneak over to DU to see how they’re taking the news.

These stinking democrat SOB’s screamed and hollard about how intrusive this legislation was .. but now they support it. You cannot get more partisan than that.

In other words, unless the dems write the legislation, it’s not good.

Remember the liberals prisms: the public is STUPID; the repubs are BAD.

If the GOP was smart, they’d immediately put out a press release congratulating Obama for “continuing Bush’s successful legacy of keeping America safe” or something to that affect.

Alas, the GOP isn’t smart.
