Embattled Gov. Paterson has pulled the plug on his bid to seek reelection, a source close to the governor said Friday.
Paterson will announce the decision later Friday.
Paterson has been under fire for having contacted a woman who accused one of his top aides of domestic violence.
The source said the governor has agreed not to seek election, but he will not resign - opting to serve out the remainder of his term.
The decision clears the way for Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who is the favorite of many Democrats, to seek the nomination unimpeded.

Taking back the State Senate is of paramount importance. Otherwise there will be a nasty Congressional map that could wipe out any gains made this year. And a State Senate that’s heavily rat like the Assembly.
Somebody has power and is using it, and it doesn't matter what any of us little people think about it -- and anyway, most don't think about it, being distracted, as they are, by talking heads and porn.
However it came to be that their monstrous health care bill didn’t get passed before summer break, that was the defining moment.
The town hall meetings gave us the tea parties gave us NJ, VA, MA, and now we have new heroes, Ryan, Kyl, Spence, all our heroes at the so called summit.
On the other hand, maybe this is good news for the residents of New York.
If the norther and western part of the state could only out-vote NYCity.
