Reporting from Washington - The Senate on Wednesday passed a jobs bill that one senator described as "modest," but one that Democrats hope will be the first in a series of attempts to jump-start hiring nationwide. More notable, perhaps, than the bill itself was the fact that 13 Republicans crossed party lines to vote for it. The $15-billion bill passed by a 70-28 tally. The bill would grant employers a "holiday" on their 6.2% Social Security payroll contribution for every new employee hired through the rest of the year, as long as that employee has been out of work for at least 60 days. It would also make it easier for businesses to write off equipment purchases and would extend federal highway and mass-transit funding programs. "For the first time in a long time we have a bill that is supported by both Democrats and Republicans," said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said shortly before the vote, but he cautioned, "This is not a magic wand that is going to be waved and all our joblessness will decline." White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the vote proved that bipartisanship in the Senate is "possible." It also marked a victory for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who has seen his chamber paralyzed by partisan warfare. Reid pushed for the vote counting on some GOP support and was rewarded earlier this week when several Republicans, including the newest senator, Scott Brown of Massachusetts, signed on...

Treasonous retards.

The way to make jobs is to end capital gains, and decrease taxes.

This is just a piece of CRAP!

Doesn’t have the power the Bush Family would like to think.

ESPECIALLY with their penchant for photo-ops with BJ Clinton.

WTF up with Hutchinson? Anybody? Isn’t she supposed to be in a tight race for a Texas Senate seat?

Not that tight. She is down by double digits in every poll i have seen lately.

New employees only.

It’s a bill without logic, but that’s no surprise to most of us here.

Even better. So you could save a fortune by firing your entire workforce and replacing them with completely different people in April. Not only do you get the sweet tax credit, but you can also pay them an entry level wage.

Don’t forget the original Texas “Big Hair” Hutchison was one of the ones pushing for TSA saying our airport screeners should be more “PROFESSIONAL.” Yeah are they are more professional at harassing everybody and making flying an extremely distateful experience.

Isn’t this a real incentive to fire my present workforce and then replace them @ GOVERNMENT SPONSORED DISCOUNT?

“The way to make jobs is to end capital gains, and decrease taxes.”

As a conservative I don’t support this bill because I haven’t read it... However, as a retired business owner, capital gains is not an impediment to hiring people. Who the hell in small business has a capital gain?

BTW, this bill does apparently reduce payroll taxes a bit. Kind of stupid to make people wait 2 months for that to kick in though.

Oppose the bill if you like, but don’t do it for phony reasons.

They make it sound like the average small business’ owner is just drooling. LOL. Business still operates on a need basis. If we have the business a 6.2% “holiday” is nice and a new lathe would be good…but we don’t have the business. Stop Washington spending and cut business taxes, then this bill might work after sales increase?
