WASHINGTON – Where to next? It's a simple question that NASA can't answer so easily anymore. The veteran space shuttle fleet is months from being mothballed and the White House has nixed a previous plan to fly to the moon.

For the first time in decades, NASA has no specific space destination for its next stop, although it has lots of places it wants to go. Future space flight, NASA officials say, now depends on new rocket science and where it can take us.

That uncertainty may not sit well with Congress, which will be grilling NASA chief Charles Bolden on Wednesday and Thursday in the first hearings since the George W. Bush moon mission was shelved.

It wasn't so much that they were Germans, but that Von Braun and his rocket club were given a great deal of freedom compared to what the manned program has been given since Apollo. The unmanned program has that kind of freedom today and has done a very good job.

The fact that the target date, if everything went perfectly, was 2020 indicates that there was no urgency and that W wasn't all that serious about his direction for NASA.

I am sure Von Braun did not hire idiots. I bet NASA is loaded with some ACORN govt worker types. I knew someone who worked closely with Von Braun and was about a smart. I also met a woman who worked on the tiles on the shuttle and she was a wack job. I think she glued em on or something.

The problem is the distances involved and that space is such an unforgiving place. When the astronauts went to the moon NASA basically crossed their fingers and hoped that a solar flare would not roast the astronauts with cosmic radiation.
