BRIGHTON, Mich. -- Administrators at Brighton High School said theyre trying to stop a style of dancing they consider obscene on school grounds and recently canceled a popular winter event to make their point.
Officials were concerned students would engage in freaking" or sexually suggestive movements on the dance floor.
The school required anyone interested in attending the Feb. 6 Winterfest dance to sign a contract beforehand, Detroit television station WDIV reported.

I’m fine. How are you?
I agree that male/female dancing is a mating ritual. But as a society, do we want it to turn into actual mating? Especially at high school dances?
The bar is so low now that if I had little children there are so many places I could not take them; that I did when I did have little children.
Wow. A public school actually found their cajones in reference to student behavior? I’m amazed.
How low can it go?
They still have their clothes on in those pictures......
Perturbed by illogical and hypocritical claims of racism.
Nothing a beer can't fix.
I have observed this “freak” dancing. It is best described as lap dancing while upright.
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
slippery slope argument perhaps but there was some crazy dancing at my prom in 1989. It seems there are other more important things to worry about.
Totally agree with your comments, LJ. ‘FREAK’ dancing is a freaking disgrace, far worse than “grinding” in the 70’s as bad as that was.
They don’t need it sanctioned by the school.
It’s not dancing. It’s simulated sex.
Just because it’s done at a school *dance* with their clothes on and to music, doesn’t make it dancing.
Yes, I am that old, thanks for the reminder!
Well, that explains your attitude.
If you teach the kids they’re animals, they’ll act like them.
If you want to consider yourself an animal, by all means, go right ahead. But don’t expect the rest of us to follow.
Sigh. These ‘more important’ things don’t just appear on their own. They follow the lesser degradation as surely as the sun rises in the morning.
We didn’t get to the lows where we are now because the date changed on the calendar. It happened because people were too stupid to realize that there is no such thing as ‘just dancing, ‘just a movie’, ‘just a pregnant cheerleader’ and so on. Everything is connected. Dancing, movies and books convey values.
We’ve gone from Elvis’ vulgar dancing, to Samantha Fox shaking her boobs on MTV, to Britney Spears doing a striptease on the Disney channel, to Marky Mark dropping his pants in front of screaming little teen girls, to Fuck for Forest at some rock festival. And similar decay in values has occurred everywhere else.
And after seeing this happen in slow motion people are *still* too stupid to recognize that this has happened and continues to happen. Those boring prudes who protested Elvis were right all along. Every decade since has shown this.
What’s wrong with being an animal? Some of my best friends are animals.
“If you teach the kids theyre animals, theyll act like them.”
And if you don’t teach them that, they’ll still act like animals, because they are animals.
I don’t doubt that, and some animals I know are better behaved than many humans I know.
Nevertheless, people are not animals even when they act like them and that does not excuse this kind of behavior.
Speak for yourself.
That’s too much of a sweeping generalization imo. You could go the other way and say that taking all sexuality out of dancing could lead to a society where no dancing would occur and no alcohol, etc. That could be a typical islamic republic, for eg.
As it is, the dancing is probably over the top but I still don’t see where it should be banned. As if that will stop anything. They’ll just take it to a non sanctioned place.
“Its not dancing. Its simulated sex.”
That’s not an argument. In fact, it’s contradictory.
